Freeload: Chairlift, “Evident Utensil (Sinden Remix)”

Up above is a video with poorly recorded sound of Chairlift performing “Bruises” at our CMJ FADER Fort last year. Below is very nicely recorded Sinden remix of Chairlift performing a totally different song. If these media were two children, the crappy one being our own and the good one being someone else’s, we would have to kidnap the quality child and leave ours at the playground, hoping it couldn’t find it’s way home.

Telepathe, “So Fine” (Chairlift Remix) MP3

You already know that we ride for Telepathe, who, after 1.3 million years have finally released the excellent Dance Mother on IAMSOUND. As if they knew we’d be fiending for a couple new tracks, they’ve added a few remixes, including this one from Chairlift. It sounds like a monster’s stomach growling while it listens to old Kate Bush records.

Speaking of Kanye, Meet The Dude Who DID NOT Direct His Latest Video

Poor Takeshi Murata. According to this letter sent to Street Carnage, he developed the video recognition and compression technique used in both Kanye’s “Welcome to Heartbreak” and Chairlift’s “Evident Utensil”, the latter which we and most other people said was Kanye’s “inspiration.” It turns out the true OG of fucked up video is, in fact, Murata who displayed said techniques in the Mailorder Monsters show at Deitch Projects in September 2007, a show Kanye apparently saw and loved. Conjecture, you say? Maybe not, as the letter was sent by Kathy Grayson, a gallery director at Deitch, who we’re guessing is neither bowled over by celebrity visits nor has any interest in talking shit. Grayson also goes on to insinuate that the directors of both videos would be well-acquainted with Murata’s work as he has given several seminars on the technique and been gracious with explaining his process. The cynical side of us would cite that “great artists steal” quote or say that if he didn’t want to get jacked he shouldn’t have thrown in his money in the sky, but neither of the music video directors appear to be great and Murata doesn’t appear to have wanted anything other than a little credit. So, if you have a lot of money or need a crazy looking video or both, feel free to holler at Murata.

Video/Freeload: Chairlift Vs. Kanye + Blaqstarr Bang Out

So yesterday when we questioned the completion status Kanye’s new video we neglected to actually check Kanye’s post of it. Turns out he only released it now because Chairlift had already released a video for “Evident Utensil” using the same distorted pixel technique. In all truthiness, the latter pulls it off much more impressively than the former but both still drive us to the brink of brain stroke. On the opposite end of the anatomical spectrum, Green Label Sound just put up a spacey new Blaqstarr remix of their exclusive track with Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek and Flosstradamus that is helping us work off some backfat. Get it below.

Video: Chairlift at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort NYC

After your black and white photo has been in Interview and your song has been in an Apple commercial, it’s easy to give the impression that you’re fancy. But Chairlift up close were surprisingly young and scruffy, dancing to reggae in oversized clothes before they played their drum machine kicked up pop. They’ve got a light swirl, not ethereal but not thick, a pleasant middle of sharp sweetness.

Stay tuned for more FADER TV from The Fort.

NYC: A New Venue is Born

Like those statistics you learned in middle school about deforestation or endangered manatee, it seems like every four seconds a new venue opens up in New York City. The latest is 92YTribeca, a new arts center opening October 18th, who are throwing a pre-opening show tomorrow night with FADER 57 GEN F-ers Crystal Stilts along with Violens and Chairlift. So you can get a jump on new venue discovery, and it’s free if you RSVP! Just email Bsisto@92Y.org with the subject “10.11.08 – 92YTribeca – BV” and your first and last name in the body of the email and you’re set. (via Brooklyn Vegan)

FADER TV: Avoiding Disease At The Yard

A couple weeks ago Brooklyn fairy godfather Todd P organized a massive mid-summer party at The Yard, a lovely greenspace on the shores of the gonorrheic Gowanus Canal (Oh shit! Gowanorrhea!), with performances by many FADER favorites such as Oneida, High Places, Shy Child, Crystal Antlers, Ponytail, Telepathe, Vivian Girls, Abe Vigoda, Soft Circle, Soiled Mattress and the Springs and Chairlift. We asked Todd if we could bring our video camera, and of course he said yes. We edited the nine or so hours down to several easily-digested minutes with performances by Ponytail, Crystal Antlers, Vivian Girls, Telepathe and Shy Child. Catch the virulent experience only on FADER TV.
