The ABSOLUT FADER Visionary Podcast #4 — Leads To
- story THE FADER
Turning the halfway corner in the Visionary Podcast series, curated by The FADER and presented by ABSOLUT as part of our ongoing efforts to advance and advocate the art and music we love, we come to the phrase, “Leads to.” These two open-ended words instantly made us think of some kind of narrative, so we tried to tell a little story through the song titles—a story that of course ends with us soaking up some sun.
After going fairly hard on #3, we mellowed this one out a little bit, traversing its length with the coastal vibes of Foreign Born, the slightly nautical Friend, a fluid jam from White Denim, Purple Wowness via a Joker and Ginz remix and the wobbly pop of our man Theophilus London. Check the tracklist after the jump, and come back soon for “Something” on podcast #5.

Open Bar With Foreign Born
- story Hanly Banks
When Los Angeles-based Foreign Born rolled through Heathers on a sloppy-hot NYC day last week, they’d just finished a whirlwind Northwest tour. They had a few beers, broke out some pretty haggard looking instruments and told us tour bummers, like having their van searched for drugs by West Texas cops. They also, with the exception of singer Matt Popieluch, did not remove their sunglasses once, which is either a cause or effect of the fuzz hassles. We may never know.
Here they are playing “Early Warnings,” just one of the many feel-good numbers from their recent album Person To Person.

Video: Foreign Born, “Winter Games”
- story Matthew Schnipper
This is exactly what Eddie Murphy must have thought New York was going to be like when he was watching TV in Zamunda in Coming To America—a bunch of soft focus Technicolor, funky boys of all colors in hats and Timbs chilling out at the community center or the roller rink or the bowling alley lobby.

The dude wearing the robe that goes over his head is my favorite. LA’s Fool’s Gold made a video meant to look like a Sublime Frequencies handicam doc. The singing in Hebrew is helping win the exotic points. Made up of members of a bunch of dudes from Foreign Born, Fool’s Gold sounds like Foreign Born. Except they jam that guitar line for way longer than Foreign Born. Actually, Foreign Born might do that, too. Wait, no. Ok I got it, Foreign Born is sundown, Fool’s Gold is sun up. If you don’t want to watch a bunch of longhairs and khaki hats jam over and over, grab the MP3. The video of shredding Cali brosephs is after the jump.

Since putting them in our new summer music issue, we’ve been keeping frequent tabs on LA’s Foreign Born and its many jamming tendrils, including the dreamy Glasser and now Fool’s Gold—principally Foreign Born’s Lewis Pesacov along with Luke Top and many, many others—extract the the flecks of Afro-pop from FB and make it the whole thing. IAMSOUND just put up this song from the collective’s self-titled album, due September 29th, and it is yet another reason to believe Los Angeles is finally coming to terms with always being sunny and near the ocean and might as well give up trying to be bummed out.

Downloading mp3s is cool, but you have to hear this album. You are going to freak out when you find that something so perfect for every barbecue, beach road trip, Memorial Day, summer Friday, outdoor Scrabble tournament and peeping tom trip to the dog park exists and you didn’t even have to commission it yourself. Listen, we ate in the park today. It’s been forever since we could do that! Yeah, yeah you can eat outside in California every day but that’s why you people in California don’t appreciate things enough. Not sure how that works out to LA’s Foreign Born being a season changing omen of majestic warmth, but it does. And, yeah, we had a mental pledge to never again blog about music’s correlation with the weather but some things just sound like sunshine so strongly that it’s difficult to stop.

Have you ever been to La Paz, Mexico? It’s about two hours north of Los Cabos in southern Baja. There is a beach there, Playa Balandra, that is carved out of mountains. The water is extremely shallow and a light blue hue that must be what the water looked like in Eden. Pelicans eat tiny circular fish, palapas keep you out of the sun. No one in La Paz likes this beach, though. They prefer El Tecolote, which is much busier and with greater waves and a host of small bars along the beach. Maybe it’s because we’re from New York, but we only went once to Tecolote before we knew something more serene was needed in our sun-seeking veins. Foreign Born hadn’t released “Vactioning People” when this trip happened, but if they had it is what we would have listened to on the fifteen minute drive from town.
