LCD Soundsystem, “Bye Bye Bayou” MP3
James Murphy covered a song by Suicide’s Alan Vega and it sounds like a disco swamp in a rainstorm. But then maybe we’re just influenced by the cover art—props to the makeup artist, that shade of violet is flattering on any face. Actually it sounds like Murphy and Vega are holed up in a bunker with mood lighting and dodging the search lamps of the helicopters flying above. It’s all very romantic. LCD is giving this away to the first 20,000 subscribers only, so skip to it if you think you can’t handle the slowburning tropic thunder.

Oak’s Happy Hour Special
- story Alex Frank
When we spoke to Jeff Madalena and and Louis Terline of Oak for our 10th anniversary issue last year, opening a bar was still just a glimmer on the horizon. Blackout is now officially open, and in true Oak fashion, is bringing the best of the best tonight, with DJ sets from DFA and LCD Soundsystem whiz James Murphy, amongst others. We predict a bar filled with Brooklyn kids (and probably a few Manhattan folk too) dressed in asymmetrical black ensembles. And If you mostly can’t afford Oak’s pricey duds, like us, the promise of an hour of $3 well drinks tonight might be your best chance of buying into the Oak way of life.
Live: Andy Butler and Pat Mahoney DJ in LA
- story THE FADER
We were pretty sure the anniversary party of Shits N Giggles in downtown
LA would be interesting considering Andy Butler of
Hercules & Love Affair and Pat Mahoney were headlining, but our
suspicions were confirmed before we even got past the lobby.
Sure, we like the occasional night out, but it’s not every day that we
have dudes with Anna Karina wigs and sailor outfits ushering through the door.
Things were even crazier inside, the interior a mixture of baroque
moulding on the walls, scented fog, and the occasional laser ray
shooting out at a roomful of really tall guys and one notable alt-porn
director. We think we heard someone call the whole thing a “sensual
brothel” and we’d have to agree.

LA: Legions of Disco 2 with Andy Butler and Pat Mahoney
- story THE FADER
If you’re a Californian, or just like hanging out somewhere in or around Los Angeles then head to Club 740 this Friday February 20th for Legions of Disco 2 featuring Andy Butler of Hercules and Love Affair and Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem, along with the usual resident DJs Victor Rodriguez, Chris Bowen, Blackdisco’s Nitedog & Lovefingers and PeePlay from Honey Soundsystem SF. We know that is a lot of names to keep track of, but if you’re partying past 5am you’re probably not going to worry about it too much anyway. Buy tickets here and check the full flyer after the jump.

Video: LCD Soundsystem, “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down”
- story THE FADER
Here’s what we love about New York: In the same way that no one even bothers to glance at some guy silently (see the iPod) doing a Kermit show on the sidewalk, we walked past Jennifer Tilly filming something on the sidewalk yesterday and people actively ignored her. We only know it was her because of the voice. It’s that kind of determined disregard for other people that will actually keep this city what it is even as skyscrapers and money stacks built up through the last decade crumble to create the grimy, crime-infested island of drunk poor people we all fantasized about before moving here and where James Murphy will be king.
LCD Soundsystem Breaks Up! LCD Soundsystem Reunites!
- story THE FADER
Maybe it makes us lazy or maybe it makes us shrewd reporters, but all we had to do was wait an hour to debunk the rumors that James Murphy was retiring LCD Soundsystem. NME reports that Murphy has already written eight songs for LCD’s next album. So maybe LCD just won’t include Al Doyle, dubious source of the break-up? This is like The Hills with poorly shaven white dudes!
Video: LCD Soundsystem, “Tribulations (Live in Manchester)”
- story THE FADER
Here is the fourth of six videos recorded by LCD Soundsystem at the show in Manchester last March. If you click on the LCD tag and watch them all in a row it’s almost like you’re from England.
Video: LCD Soundsystem, “North American Scum (Live in Manchester)”
- story THE FADER
This is the third of LCD’s self-posted videos from their recent Manchester show, and it has lifted us out of the Monday doldrums and into a sort of higher state of continental self-loathing.
Video: LCD Soundsystem, “Daft Punk is Playing at My House (Live in Manchester)”
- story THE FADER
Here’s the second of several live videos from LCD Soundsystem’s recent show in Manchester, Enguhlund. The first is here. Murphy goes kinda nuts on this version of “Daft Punk” affecting his vocals with a weird vibrato and all sorts of yelps and squeals that we haven’t seen him do that much elsewhere, but we haven’t decided yet if we like it or not. We probably will eventually because everything he does is way ahead of its time.
Video: LCD Soundsystem “All My Friends (Live in Manchester)”
- story THE FADER
LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” has been on heavy rotation all year, and we’ve posted it in just about every form that’s been given to us (we even had to take down a couple forms of it per DFA). LCD’s UK label EMI is YouTubing the band’s videos from their recent show in Manchester, one of which the band is posting on its website every week until Christmas, and “All My Friends” is this week’s entry. Stay tuned here to get first crack.
