Kidd Kidd, New Kidd On The Block Mixtape
- story Felipe Delerme
Young Money Stanleys (read: us) remember Kidd Kidd from his days anchoring Wayne’s very first Young Money endeavor, Sqad Up. That group, however, has long since disbanded, leaving Gutta still holding the inside of Wayne’s pocket, Supe and Young Yo missing in action, and Kidd Kidd finally making power moves on his own. This New Kidd On The Block tape contains brand new material as well as a bunch of songs featuring both Wayne and Drake, like the original version of “Forever.” The three wrote together regularly before Kidd Kidd parted ways with the label earlier this year and this coming-out-party of a mixtape is as good a place as any to showcase the rest of the songs his scene-stealing verses will probably just get edited out of. Check out Kidd Kidd airing out Mario’s “Break Up” instrumental and download New Kidd On The Block below.

Video: The Carter Trailer
- story Peter Macia
Adam Bhala Lough’s in-depth behind-the-scenes documentary on Wayne, titled The Carter whipped up Sundance this year, even getting Variety to compare to Dylan (cause that’s who old people compare awesome shit to), and will finally be out on DVD on November 17th. Bhala Lough is only 26 but already has a pretty decent filmography with his graffiti feature Bomb The System and doc on another “crazy” musician, Lee Scratch Perry, The Upsetter, so the likelihood that The Carter is good is pretty good. Plus, the trailer is about as riveting as anything we’ve seen lately.
Lil Wayne, No Ceilings Mixtape
- story Peter Macia
The New Yorker laid a wreath on rap last week and got an instant and thorough undressing via Das Racist, but an even better defense is No Ceilings, which is so ridiculous, awesome and vital that you’d be really hard-pressed convincing us that Wayne (and rap, by association) isn’t just getting started. Like, has Sasha Frere-Jones not heard “Swag Surfin’“? Wayne sounds like Pearl from 227 on that shit. Is there another genre doing impressions of cranky old sitcom ladies and making it sound like the best idea since bottled beer? Don’t think so. To be fair, Frere-Jones probably wrote that story a while ago, but it’s not like Wayne didn’t help foist Drake and Nikki Minaj on pop this year, Cudi didn’t sell a ton of records with some help from Ratatat and “Empire State of Mind” isn’t just about the new official song of New York City. Blueprint 3 may not have had “A Milli,” but nobody is really depending on Jay-Z to supply #1 jams anymore anyway. We’re just glad new Wayne tapes still feel like a big deal, even if some people don’t care anymore.

The thought of Wayne going to jail for eight months on gun charges sometime soon is ridiculous, mostly because two of rap’s living legends will be in the clink for the same thing at the same time. We’re not saying these dudes should get a pass because they’re really wealthy celebrities and need to be able to defend themselves, but if we were really wealthy celebrities we would probably consider owning a gun to protect our millions more than we do to protect our scratched up iPhones. Anyway, being locked up certainly isn’t going to slow Wayne down as he’s definitely already got a bunch of material and plans for two albums by December, the upcoming No Ceilings mixtape from which these songs come, plus whatever else he decides to record before his sentencing in February. Best of luck to him either way. Enjoy Wayne’s take on Gucci and FLY and let us know in the comments what you think about Wayne’s case.

Lil Wayne f. Kidd Kidd, Mack Maine & Nicki Minaj, “Thinking to Myself” MP3
Anybody who thinks Lil Wayne doesn’t have soul needs to check themselves. This dude just taps into his passion pit and lets loose. Granted, it usually comes out when he is talking about punany, but the public record shows that Weezy is one fertile dude. In this one he also addresses himself (as “Self”). Might be a first for him, might not, but it’s office consensus that if we want to find out we will have to go through about 96,000 tracks and we don’t have time for that right now (got a magazine to put out and Lil Wayne’s babies to feed!), so if you know the answer, please tell us in the comments.

Lil Wayne, “Madden ’08″ MP3
- story Matthew Schnipper
First time this track is out minus DJ tags. Weird that that DJ was Bob Costas crying about Madden’s retirement. Wayne’s Saints crushed the Giants yesterday, Wayne’s Drew Brees shout never more timely. Put me in the game on 4th and inches. This is a metaphor we would have to explain to our mothers. Less a radio track than “Lollipop.” Wonder if Kobe Bryant is jealous?

Video: Baby f. Drake & Lil Wayne, “Money to Blow”
It feels marginally significant that this is essentially a Drake song—he raps first and does the hook anyway—but if we were Baby we’d definitely position ourselves in the middle between Drizzy and Weezy, too. Even if people snooze during your part they still wanna see how it ends. It’s interesting to see such a classic pre-recession type of video with cars and cascading waterfalls of cash raining down upon Baby’s delicate bald head, but for some reason this is less annoying than hearing about Jay-Z’s Tribeca loft, maybe because we are easily irritated New Yorkers and this is a cartoony video set resembling The Price is Right.
Young Money f. Lloyd, “Bed Rock” MP3
- story Peter Macia
“Bed Rock” doesn’t quite have the same magic as “Every Girl,” even though it’s rumored to be the first official single from the Young Money album, but having Minaj on here putting all these boys in their places is definitely something that was missing on its Young Money predecessor. As FADER editor Felipe Delerme learned recently, Nikki Nicki has a knack for making grown men nervous. If anyone knows the producer of the beat, drop the name in the comments.

This is about as much of an event in the music video world as it gets these days. And it premiered on the internet as far as we’re concerned. Still can’t decide who has the best verse. Let us know in the comments.

At the speed these dudes record, we wouldn’t be surprised if they wheeled Drake to the studio immediately following his operation, shoved a mic in front of him and then like three minutes later this song was on the internet. This is probably as good a time as any to read our Drake cover story, because by the time you finish there’ll be another couple thousand new Drake songs to check out.
