Video: M83, “We Own the Sky” + Maps Remix
- story THE FADER
If you ever find yourself a stop beyond the one that takes you home because you fell asleep on the train at 4am and instead of waiting an hour for another train in the other direction you decide to walk the 10 blocks in the pouring rain hoping you don’t get hit by a truck, M83’s Saturdays=Youth is probably about as good an album as you can find for that particular circumstance. Not that it’s ever happened to us. A while back M83’s label held a contest to create a video for “We Own the Sky” and it seems this is the winner, created by director David Altobelli, motion designer Dan Norton and VFXer Matt Divito. As an added bonus, download this slightly more upbeat remix of the song by Mute Records’ moody Maps.

We’ve been seeing a lot of people on regular old rollerskates rolling around New York lately, so it seems that a sport that has become the domain of weird guys who hang around bike trails and empty wading pools in the winter actually might be on the upswing again. Not that M83 are America’s Zeitgeist or anything, but what if the “Kim & Jessie” video is the beginning of a new era of rollerskating? Pretty soon inline skaters are going to be pushed away by girls like the ones in this video, wearing pink uniforms and totally taking over the track every day. For now though, let’s enjoy the innocence of another M83 video that reminds us of the ’80s for no real reason at all.

M83 have always veered close to full on ’80s dream pop territory—an idea we aren’t necessarily mad at but that is often highly, HIGHLY dubious. Lets chalk this one up as a win for M83 then. We’re looking forward to their new album Saturdays=Youth, coming out next week and full of over the top melodrama and cheesy vocal samples all meshing together to create the sound of being 13.
