This is just unfair at this point. When Akon signed Frenchie, we could’ve assumed they’d be collaborating at some point, but we also happen to know that French already has a vault full of Dame Grease bangers to choose from for his proper debut. And now he’s convinced Akon to climb out of his Auto-tomb to bind French’s verses on some New York “Soul Survivor” shit? Have people stopped playing “New York Minute” already? They shouldn’t have—although it’s a bit more understandable as French continues, with startling consistency, the onslaught he and Max began together. Fresh off his Gen F profile in the current issue, French also recently sent over “Nutin 2 Meee,” which will probably get buried in one of his mixtapes, among a bunch of other great mixtape music, but we’d happily advise more people to release mixtape music untagged if it hit as hard as this does.

Max B is locked up and probably will be for quite a while, but the wave must go on. NYC surrogate rookie of the year French Montana continues to carry the flag though, introducing the rest of the wave gang on “More Money” in Mac Mustard and Hollywood Fergie. And while Max’s aura is clearly visible in T-shirt form, French and crew will no doubt be in attendance for Max’s July 31st sentencing, which they are also asking fans to show up for.

Back in April “New York Minute” had us believing not just in Max B sideman and Konvict signee, French Montana, but in our very own city. And now we have a video with pictures of our very own city and French Montana AND Jadakiss and all we want to do is go to Hawaii. Not that the two are related.

Freeload: Max B, “Never Wanna Go Back”
- story THE FADER
Currently on trial for murder, Max B is in the fight of his life and releases “Never Wanna Go Back” from the perspective of already having spent nearly a decade of his life behind bars. The beat, produced by frequent Max collaborator Young Los, who Max once told us
he imported from Ohio, sounds like something Wu-Tang should have been rapping over when they decided to shake things up a bit for Iron Flag. Understandably, there’s a #freemaxb twitter campaign going on right now and “Never Wanna Go Back” would be as strong an argument as any.

For a while we were sure French Montana was this sort of Slash to Max B’s Axl Rose; stand around and look cool and give people a break from Max’s drunken lullaby. Then we heard the Coke Wave mixtape and got really excited about someone from New York who wants to sound like they are actually from New York. French released the The Laundry Man EP as a follow up to his Macaroni With The Cheese mixtape, which if the titles alone are to be believed, both prove that he really likes money. What you’ll have to listen to discover is that he also enjoys abusing Dame Grease beats and reintroducing Akon as a thoroughbred chorus horse.

Is New York in the house, say whatttttt?!? We listen to a song like “New York Minute” and suddenly we’re not looking down on people who buy those t-shirts that say “New York Fucking City” because it reminds us that at one time it really was, New York Fucking City. French Montana held it down admirably during Max and his Coke Wave crusade, but having just signed to Akon’s Konvict Music label, it would seem we aren’t the only ones excited about someone who makes NYC sound like a place you’d want to live. We don’t mean to get all “bring New York back” on you, but this is the kind of music Jay-Z probably wishes he was still making. Actually, that’s not true.

FADER TV: Max B Welcomes Us Into His Home (Part II)
- story THE FADER
Here’s a shortened account of exactly what happened when we went to interview Max B: We arrived at his house, took our shoes off (but not our coats), Max introduced like 15 people kicking it in his living room, he talked in patois for a minute and then we kind of kind of chased him around the apartment. You can’t really see any of that in this video, but if you watch Part I and Part II (above) back to back you’ll probably feel just as close to Max as we did.
FADER TV: Max B Welcomes Us Into His Home
- story THE FADER
Not long after we arrived at Max B’s apartment for this interview, his assistant Joli O’Wave told us that earlier in the day they’d received an eviction notice due to continued noise complaints. If they don’t appear concerned, it’s because the apartment is one of four Max owns in the building. It also happens to be the one where he does all of his recording, which is a lot. We also did a lot of recording and had to split the interview into two parts — Part II coming tomorrow. In between recording for an upcoming tape with Big Mike ( for which Beanie Sigel appeared later in the evening), Max breaks down his lifestyle (wavy), the music he puts out (wavy) and what he uses to record (Waves).

- story THE FADER
Just when we thought we’d reached calmer seas, a new wave emerges. We scoured the internets for a full version of Max B’s “V.I.P.” as soon as we heard the snippet listed as “Want” on Wavy Off That Grand Cru 2. Turns out that it wasn’t even out yet. But today, out of nowhere, we get sound and pictures! Max and French made for a hell of a tandem on Coke Wave, so we’ll be expecting no less from the impending Coke Wave 2.
Freeload: Charles Hamilton f. Max B, “The North Pole”
- story THE FADER
Though it’s only the upper part of Manhattan, seasonally, Harlem can feel a lot like a poorly insulated bedroom: way too hot in the summer and cold as hell in the winter. We wouldn’t go so far as to equate it with the North Pole, but then again we don’t live there. Charles Hamilton and Max B both live there, but until this song, probably wouldn’t even have appeared on the same mixtape. Charlie Wilson isn’t from Harlem, but The Gap Band’s family reunion staple, “Outstanding” brings Charles and Max together like long lost brothers.
