Aidonia & Federation Sound, Bolt Action Mixtape
- story Felipe Delerme
Di-Di-Di-Di-Di-Di-Di-Di-Di-Donia! We’ve kept pretty good track of the steady stream of Aidonia one-offs this summer, but what we’d been hoping for all along was some kind of concentrated full length. Seeing as how Aidonia isn’t even really affiliated with a crew, let alone signed to a label, that was always a lofty wish. Luckily we have friends in high places like Federation Sound’s Max Glazer, who didn’t mind traveling all the way to JA to meet up with Donia to have him voice some of rap’s toughest instrumentals for the closest thing to an Aidonia album as we can hope for right now. Bolt Action utilizes beats like Raekwon’s “Ice Cream” and C-Murder’s “Down 4 My Niggaz” longside classic riddims like “Answer” and “Fat Ting,” which together serve to de-cloak Donia’s grating lyricism in a way most modern riddims just aren’t built for. And like the tape cover’s dismantled gun, Bolt Action is Aidonia redefined, yet ever-ready for warfare.

NYC: Sean Paul, Ricky Blaze, Badda Badda Gals + More Wear their Sunglasses at Night
- story THE FADER
Tomorrow night Max Glazer and Kenny Meez celebrate the 10th anniversary of Federation Soundsystem presented by Sunglass Hut, Business Class and, duh, Federation Sound, at Santos Party House. That means Max and Kenny have been repping dancehall since the last millenium. Like since Sean Paul was an underground artist. Since before Cipha Sounds was a member of the Big Dog Pitbulls. Since before FADER was a magazine. Since when Guiliani was Mayor and Al Gore was the next President and Max was the reggae buyer at Fat Beats. Since a long-ass time, basically. Lucky for us though this event promises to be less of a nostalgia-fest and more of a nowadays thing, and since Sunglass Hut is the sponsor we can only assume everyone will be properly shaded up and Bruk Up’s new “Sunglasses” dance will be getting heavy rotation (we also assume the whole crew will be dipped in Lacoste ‘cause we saw Max and the Badda Badda Gals walking by Habana Outpost with a baby-stroller full of new Lacoste kicks last week—true story). And finally, since those gals are guaranteed to perform alongside Sean Paul, Ricky Blaze and Cipha Sounds, we assume the door situation will be banana clips and you’d better get there early. Come true!

Ghetto Palms: Ladies First
- story THE FADER
Every week resident FADER selector Eddie STATS runs through dancehall riddims and other artifacts from the ghetto archipelago. This week, FADER O.G. And guest columnist Max Glazer of the internationally known Federation soundsystem runs through the “Dem Gal Sittin” riddim plus some other current 45s from female DJs
Since the weather is finally starting to break and Summer is right around the corner, I figured it would be appropriate to spend a little time with some of the lovely ladies of dancehall. While at least a third of all dancehall music is dedicated to the hot gal dem (the other two-thirds being devoted primarily to guns and ganja) there have traditionally been only a handful of female DJs. 2008 looks to be a promising year for female talent with a new crop of ladies representing for their sistren and even going toe to toe with the fellas. On to the music!
