Jeremy Scott’s Cartoon Savannah
Jeremy Scott’s first collection for Adidas, released earlier this year, was a glittery-gold selection of irresistibly cut (wearable) harem pants, sequins, sporty fringed tanks and coveted winged hightops. His next installment abandons his black-gold-and-silver, Studio 54 color palette for a hue explosion and elongation of the tribal streetwear trend pioneered by MIA and Cassette Playa. Leopard-spotted sweatshirts, global mapped bodycon dresses and “tribal mask”-printed, exposed-pocket track suits all make appearances in this eminently watchable video collaboration with the video director Nabil. Appropriately, The Very Best, Esau Mwamwaya, MIA and Santigold soundtrack the trampoliney splashing around his collection apparently demands.

Premiere: The Very Best f. MIA, “Rain Dance” MP3
- story Peter Macia
FADER #52 cover The Very Best, aka Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit, join with FADER #27 cover and all-around FADER muse MIA for one of the more hectic deep cuts off The Warm Heart of Africa LP, finally available for purchase tomorrow. Samples identified so far: whistles, crickets, handclaps, toads, a rainstick, thunder, actual rain, heavy breathing and either a baby hiccuping or some kind of bird. We’ve been dancing along for about an hour and don’t see any clouds looming but we are sweating something crazy, so that has to count for something. Pre-order the album on iTunes today or go back tomorrow and buy it in real time. And if you want it on vinyl or CD, that will be available on October 6th. Advance copies come with a body sponge. Not true, but it is incredible.

Major Lazer f. Prince Zimboo & MIA, “Baby (Switch RMX)” MP3
This track is a short, powerful burst of autotune baby, sparse rhythm and Prince Zimboo’s “heh” as a counter-rhythm, which sounds awesome, though not sure we really needed to hear him talking about breast milk before MIA’s politically charged treatise and heart-hurting confessional about growing up without a pops. MIA gets multiple daps for repping single moms, and “Baby,” off the Major Lazer Mishka mix (and Prince Zimboo’s Facebook page), proves MIA, Switch and Diplo remain the most powerful trio of all the potential Major Lazer combos (you probably found this by googling), their collective intensity fitting together like global diaspora Tetris. Sidebar: MIA’s kid in Henry Holland (above) is just like, the cutest shit ever.

Rye Rye, “Rock Off Shake Off” MP3
We still cannot get over the fact that Rye Rye is pregnant in the “Bang” video. If we were pregnant we would be sitting on our couch eating popcorn, watching Oprah reruns, bitching excessively and cursing the bastard who planted the bun in our oven, not dancing our asses off and looking super cute and being awesome. Some people have different skill sets. They’re offering this new Daft Punk-sampling electro banga on the finally-launched N.E.E.T. site, where you should go now if you want MIA’s hand to flip you the bird while you bang your head on Rye Rye’s sub bass.

Video: Rye Rye f. MIA, “Bang”
MIA directed this video for her young youth protegé, Bmore sweetheart Rye Rye, and it looks virtually identical to half the stuff on Brooklyn Cable Access (but with more neon outfits), which is brilliant. Somehow extra lo-fi video FX and scrappy animation (i.e. Major Lazer “Hold the Line” video) seem exactly right for recession times, like with all our circumstantially forced-DIYness and dearth of resources people have foregone pricey HD and dug up the Betacam from a box in their parents’ basement. The budget was clearly spent on Rye Rye’s epic makeup job (props) and handiwipes to erase the sweat from peoples’ brows, most of which went to Rye Rye cause she is the best dancer.

Exclusive Freeload: Afrikan Boy, “I Go Chop’am” MP3
- story THE FADER
Young genius like Fela Kuti… but the rapper version, raps Afrikan Boy in this track off the long-awaitedd Can of Whoopass Vol. 1: The Rise of Captain Africa mixtape, and we are not at all inclined to disagree. There’s something infinitely more menacing about an MC who challenges all others to verbal duels without resorting to evil barking or voice-raising—here, Afrikan Boy’s delivery is so calm and joyful (check the cascading waterfall of autotune, courtesy of producer Zakee) you know he has the confidence to beast whomever on the mic, and the wordplay to match. Somebody call Joe Budden, this is killing it! We hear Afrikan Boy will be touring the US in June/July and dropping a video for “Lagos Town” soon, so don’t sleep.

Exclusive Video: Rye Rye Webisode with Super Pregs MIA
- story THE FADER
Oh man, the good old days. Before we knew his cool little ass was named Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman, MIA’s baby son was chilling in the studio in his mom’s tummy while she talked up her new protegé—burgeoning superstar and rainbow-hair-flipper extraordinaire Rye Rye, who is currently getting ready to release her debut album. We met up with Rye Rye down in Austin and will have some special stuff with her up soon, but in the meantime, we just got this exclusive look behind the scenes with her and mama Maya.
Stylee Fridays: MIA Talks Fashion
- story THE FADER
We reported on the Okley “the real pirate of the Caribbean” Leslie video, shot by MIA with clothes by MIA earlier this year—watermelon print hoodies, body suits, little dogs shagging on the beach among other moments of awesome. Those designs are now up for sale on her website as well as on the racks at Opening Ceremony. Of course there were several questions that needed to be answered—who is Okley Leslie? Is a full-blown MIA fashion takeover in the works? And will MIA be making baby clothes anytime soon?
We were reminded about these question marks a couple of weeks ago after spotting MIA looking more stylish than ever rocking a gorgeous preggers belly like it was the best accessory on the planet. So last week we emailed her in hopes of getting to the bottom of it all. In the extensive interview MIA talks about the making of the video and designing clothes (at this stage she considers the collection “extended merch” rather than a clothing line), about JA dance crews and flying boats, and the importance of encouraging your kids to learn the truth about life.
Know Your (Copy)Rights: Predicting The Sampling Fallout From “Paper Planes”
- story THE FADER
As the rap world’s fascination with MIA’s “Paper Planes” and the parade of “remixes” featuring the likes of 50 Cent, Jim Jones and Freeway (possibly) starts to subside, we’ve been thinking about why more hip-hop producer’s haven’t sampled The Clash, whose “Straight To Hell” is the basis of Diplo’s beat. After the jump, FADER editors Eric Ducker and Eddie “Stats” Houghton discuss over instant messenger what the beatmakers have been missing, who probably blew it and whether you’ll be hearing the harmonica from “(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais” on Myrtle Ave. any time soon.
Freeload: Trey Songz, “Paper Planes Freestyle”
- story THE FADER
If you read the title of this post and rolled your eyes at another “Paper Planes,” we implore you to reembrace fun and enjoyment, especially since Trey is the first one to really adhere to MIA’s pitch-perfect cadence and humor (”Trey Songz… First World Hypocrisy”) on the original. (via Mad Decent)
