Stream: The Phoenix Remix Album + 20 Songs That Changed Their Lives
- story Peter Macia
During the first song of Phoenix’s Musicvision session, guitarist Christian Mazzalai says of a certain major 7th in Curtis Mayfield’s “Blue Monday People,” that it is the chord that changed their lives as a band, that it is “full of sadness yet filled with hope.” These seven words might as well be the thesis of our recent cover story on Phoenix, but the rest of the 70-minute video reveals so much about Phoenix, their formation and their favorite songs that we like to think of it as the perfect companion to our story. And if that isn’t enough to avoid working today, it has been pointed out in the comments of a recent post that CBS Radio is streaming the new Phoenix remix album in full on their site, including a ton of stuff we haven’t heard until just now.

New Phoenix Remixes from The Soft Pack and Shuttle
- story Peter Macia
Phoenix supposedly have an entire bonus disc of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix remixes coming out with the deluxe version of the album soon, but unless it’s filled with revisionarisms that will explode planet Earth, it seems the band is willingly giving away that whole bonus disc for free on its own. The newest two are a nuggetfied Soft Pack cover of “Fences” and tropical/funky sounding rework of “Love Like A Sunset” from Passion Pit drummer Nate Donmoyer aka Shuttle, who might have gotten firsthand approval from Phoenix while touring with them recently. Or he just stole shit off their computers. Either way, keep ‘em coming.

Head just exploded when reading title. So excited. Hipster Runoff will probably write a 3,000 word rant about how this song creates co-branded eternal bliss or something, but honestly, you should never be afraid to like a song, and we love this. The remix, as Deakin says on the Phoenix blog, is the result of mutual admiration and a subconscious association with marine life, and actually sounds like they might’ve recorded it together underwater.

Phoenix, “Rome (Neighbours Remix f. Devendra Banhart)” MP3

As much as we obviously love Phoenix, none of the many remixes of the songs off Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix really did them justice. Some were decent and some were terrible, but none accentuated or illuminated what was already pretty perfect. Putting a disco beat on “Lizstomania,” for example, is good for an afternoon but not exactly a remix for the ages. However, this morning brought something around, somehow involving FADER vet Devendra Banhart, that actually does what a remix is supposed to do. This version of “Rome” takes the most heartbreaking of Wolfgang’s tracks and strips it entirely of Phoenix’s singular ability to make sad songs sound at least a little triumphant. Devendra and whoever just make it absolutely miserable, which in the end, is probably good for when you want to feel depressed. Now all we have to do is get Andrew WK to make a “Rome” remix that sounds like doing beerbongs with Jesus and we’ll be set.
Read our recent Phoenix cover story, in full, right here, and see a couple photos from Phoenix’s insanely great shows in New York’s Central park this past weekend. Make sure to see them at one of their few remaining US tour dates if you can or in Europe if you have the means.

Kinema, “Circles” MP3
Despite the fact that :Kinema: would like us to surround their name with colons like a fence of punctuation a la Smog, there is nothing annoying about the Brit trio’s glossy Phoenix-y pop. This song’s welcoming guitars are the sound equivalent of wearing a giant fluffy turtleneck and walking through Central Park in autumn—total comfort food.

It’s almost too good to be true: one of our favorite bands (and FADER 62 cover stars) remixed by one of our OTHER favorite bands into a cowbelly dream sequence that channels the spirit of early ’90s house and reminds Julianne to watch her favorite movie and life-template Party Girl again. Seriously, did Zeus extend his mighty god-hand into our heads, extract this very thing from our subconscious and lead the universe into its creation? Cause we didn’t know Zeus was down with us like that, but we’ll take it. Also, if you’re listening oh great one, we could use a public option and a rave vacation in London. Not to get greedy, just saying.

Today, We Are Winning At Life!
We were already feeling pretty awesome today, having just shipped our extraordinary next issue (total mindblower) to the printers and looking forward to the prospect of post-work margaritas in the sun. But now we feel even more awesome thanks to the internet: the Media critique outlet Mediate thinks our Phoenix cover story “runs laps” around the most recent issues of other music magazines. Also, one of our favorite bloggers/producers Big Space was stoked we wrote about his awesome track, because now he thinks he is going to get laid. Hey guys, we do what we can. Thanks a million!
Freeload: The FADER Issue 62 Podcast
- story THE FADER
We and you and everyone we know has been trumpeting the Summer Of Love 2009, and it was our mantra as we put together FADER Issue 62. We scoured the universe for the summeriest, most barbecuey music this year and came up with an issue that, if you scratch-and-sniff it, smells vaguely coconutty like Hawaiian Tropic (not really). As such, this issue’s podcast, presented by Bacardi B-LIVE, is about as clear a definition of what we think you should be listening to in the coming months as we could possibly make. It’s got songs from every artist in the issue from cover stars Phoenix, Major Lazer, Maluca, DJ Sega and Popo; featured power-bros Young Dro, Dum Dum Girls, Wavves, Crocodiles, Family Time Records fam, Gen Fers Omega, D-Lo and Sleepy D, Esser, CFCF, and like a trizillion more people! Download it below and listen while reading the issue, scorching hot like the sun on newsstands right now. And come back to TheFADER.com in two weeks for the free issue PDF that you can save on your computer until the robots take over.

FADER TV: Phoenix “Lisztomania” (Live)
- story THE FADER
As you probably know by now if you read this site semi-regularly, Phoenix graces one of the covers of our next issue. We flew to Paris and hung out with them and learned that they are the nicest guys in the world while also being one of the world’s greatest bands. On record they are near perfect, almost unbelievably clean and precise, but live they are probably the tightest band we’ve seen in recent memory, imperfecting that perfection into something almost inexplicably awesome. Unless you count the “holy shit,” which was the common response last night when Phoenix played Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. We managed to get them soundchecking “Lisztomania” on camera before the mayhem of the actual show, so you can catch a glimpse of how it all comes together. For photos and a haiku review of the show, head over to The Tripwire, and stay tuned for some more footage from last night on FADER TV.
We Party (and Make Magazines)
- story THE FADER
WORLD PREMIERE!! FADER #62, our Summer Music issue, hits newsstands next week and these are the covers. But this week might be the end of us. We’re seeing our latest coverstars Major Lazer at least three times and Phoenix hopefully twice. We’re going to remix the entirety of Guns Don’t Kill People Lazers Do on this new Major Lazer iDrum app and then drink some French wine with the Phoenix guys, or at least some kids who work at APC or maybe just by ourselves. We’re going to hand out copies of our new issue like we’re the rich uncle at the wedding and they are $20 bills and then we’re going to pass out on Sunday and start making the next one on Monday (Jokes! We’re already working on it.) So if you see us on the town before then, rambling and not smelling very good, just grab a copy and move along. We’ll take showers next week, we promise.
