Video: Tanlines, “Game Two”
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
Wave of the future! Tanlines just released a song that was recorded on an iPhone accompanied by a video made with Google Earth. We just watched it three times trying to figure out how they made what sounds like Gregorian chants in the middle of an all night Euro-rave at a Polish club into exactly what we want to hear at any given moment during the day.
The ABSOLUT FADER Visionary Podcast #5 — Something
- story Peter Macia
The penultimate installment of the Visionary Podcast series, curated by The FADER and presented by ABSOLUT as part of our ongoing efforts to advance and advocate the art and music we love, is about “Something.” Yes, everything is about something, true, but if that something is nothing then what does anything really mean? Who knows!
Oddly, the most ambiguous of all the podcast inspirations was the easiest one to select. We took something from our girl Bethany Cosentino bka Best Coast, a few things from Sincerely Yours signee JJ, a little more something from Free Energy, everything from Tanlines, and finished it off with a horizon-gazing track from Nosaj Thing. Check the tracklist after the jump, and come back soon for the final Visionary podcast, inspired by all things “Exceptional.”

Live: FADER 63 Issue Release Party
- story THE FADER
- photo John Francis Peters
The last time we had a FADER issue release party, summer was just beginning and we couldn’t have been more psyched. Now that summer is on the way out, we are still strangely psyched. Helping our general enthusiasm for all things slightly colder and slightly darker was last night’s FADER 63 Fall Fashion Issue release party DJ’d by Kingdomand featuring a Glasser performance backed by our dudes in Tanlines (Glasslines!). After a couple minor sound difficulties were ironed out, the three performers locked into a Kate Bush-esque groove and stole our hearts immediately. After a few Budweisers, we headed out into the semi-brisk air, weirdly excited to start wearing coats again. After the jump check out a bunch of snaps from the event.
Video: Tanlines, “Three Trees”
- story Matthew Schnipper
Rollercoasters are gross. But hey, if you want to puke at 10AM, be our guest. At least you can soundtrack your ralphing with Tanlines, who sound like they’ve been spending a lot of time listening to the mambo and reggaeton of La Mega on new track, “Three Trees.” But they record in Greenpoint, a distinctly Polish neighborhood, not necessarily the place in Brooklyn you would expect to hear Latin sounds seeping out car windows in early September. But, as if to bring us back to his own roots, former Storm and Stress member/current Tanlines member Eric Emm employs outro a la a good old days-style guitar nerd outro. Math rock is an ethnic genre now, too.
Bombay Bicycle Club, “Dust on the Ground” (Tanlines Remix) MP3
- story Matthew Schnipper
Bombay Bicycle Club sounds like the kind of band you’ve never heard of that you later find out has sold 400,000 copies of their debut album and has a lead singer who was on American Idol who is no Kelly Clarkson. But only 27,000 people have watched the original version of “Dust on the Ground,”, not the 4.2 million that would indicate Idolatry. Plus, they’ve been in Dollars to Pounds a couple times so they couldn’t be too popular. Tanlines‘ most watched YouTube only has 6,000 views. Negligible differences, maybe, but symbolically significant. Of what, not sure. Maybe of the fact that Tanlines’ version of “Dust on the Ground” is slightly more than four times better than Bombay Bicycle Club’s and is sure to be heard slightly more than four times less. What was that other pre-Jonas Brothers Nickelodeon show with the kids in the apartment with parent musicians? Some analogy like that works. Not sure if Jonas Brothers were a TV show first.

Freeload: Tanlines Michael Jackson Tribute MP3
- story THE FADER
This song doesn’t even have a name. We were surprised to find it in our inbox so quickly after The King’s death yesterday, so we asked Tanlines‘ Jesse Cohen what the deal was. He said, “We were working in the studio on something else when the news broke and I happened to be playing with a synth that sounded like the one from ‘Beat It.’ So Eric figured out the guitar line and we made this tribute quickly.” You can see them pulling this together briefly in the above video. As we said before, the breadth of MJ’s influence and spark are immeasurable and maybe the good of his passing will be its reignition. Let this be the beginning.

Audio: Restless People, “Victimless Crime”
- story THE FADER
In a brief IM conversation about whether or not 1. “Victimless Crime” sounds at all like Operation Ivy and 2. whether or not it is appropriate to say that on TheFADER.com, it was decided that Restless People have started a genre called “new teenager”—because old teenager was Operation Ivy and ska punk (Sidebar: Did you also just rediscover how amazing a song “Friday Night, Saturday Morning” is?) is not what today’s teens are interested in, it’s too naive. Restless People, a new project comprising all of Tanlines and some of Professor Murder, takes the spirit and complicates it. Check the vocal tone and rhythm, the way the shaker sounds like a stroked guitar. But they’ve got an electronic fuss and steady backbeat, too, a fruitful, solid merging of the two groups from which they came. And keeping it futuristic, they’re releasing the music via a new online venture, Family Edition.

Freeload: The Tough Alliance, “A New Chance (Tanlines Remix)”
- story THE FADER
Maybe we’re a little zinged they got the jump on this remix by two recent FADER favorites, but c’mon Pitchfork, show a little enthusiasm! (<---See how we did that!!!) For real, we've been a little unimpressed with the stream of Tough Alliance revisioneers so far, but this Tanlines remix avoids the temptation to just slap a house beat under their vocals and instead turns the original’s airy bounce to Wham! strength grump annihilator.

Video: Tanlines, “Bejan”
- story THE FADER
During that weird period when Red Hot Chili Peppers were the touchstone for an entire generation of shitty rap-rock bands a big fuss was made about them recording in a haunted house and how crazy and groundbreaking they were. Some of that is true, but generally the bad outweighs the good when it comes to their music. Lucky for us, Tanlines‘ video for “Bejan” allows us to relive the glory days of penis socks, gibberish raps and the entire concept of Flea without actually having to listen to RHCP.
Exclusive Freeload: El Guincho, “Kalise” (Tanlines Remix) + DJ Set
- story THE FADER
Not too long ago Tanlines came through the shoebox-sized EVR studio to play a bunch of records followed by an epic, sort of unplanned live set that even had the crowds waiting for tables at Lil Frankie’s dancing. Tomorrow night the duo are DJing at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art (150 W. 17th St) from 6-10pm, and while they might not draw the random street crowds this time around (probably because they won’t be in a room made entirely of glass), there will be food, drink and a chance to tell them to play their remix of El Guincho’s “Kalise,” which is just about the happiest thing we’ve heard all week. If that’s not enough Tanlines for you, their “New Flowers” 12-inch is now available here and here. Watch the homemade video for the “Kalise” remix up above and download the song below for the next two weeks only.
