Freeload: Stag & Dagger Festival MP3 Bonanza

In our newest issue—available on paper or magic PDF paper—we chose Micachu & The Shapes to represent cover icon David Byrne’s tendency to be in the thick of things yet totally out of it. Cool, yet not cool. Micachu is right in the middle of the UK pop scene but is nowhere near anyone else, as you can hear on this cover of Toddla T’s “Backchatter” with Miss Bienek. Micachu will be playing Vice’s gigantic UK festival Stag & Dagger this Thursday at the London venue, and subsequent days will host every other band we’ve liked over the last year or so. So, go buckwild on free songs from a few of our favorites from the lineup and pick up Stag & Dagger tickets here.

Audio: Telepathe and Effi Briest Cover Each Other

Meeting of the minds! Effi Briest and Telepathe link up to cover each other’s songs for a super limited 7-inch for Skinny Wolves. Effie Briest turn Telepathe’s “Chrome’s On It” into a wide open heady psych jam, appropriating small bits from the original, while Telepathe take a few cues from living in New York and yelp out lyrics with so much conviction that you might believe they invented No Wave. Figure out how much your money is worth in pounds and then go here to grab the vinyl.

Telepathe, “So Fine” (Chairlift Remix) MP3

You already know that we ride for Telepathe, who, after 1.3 million years have finally released the excellent Dance Mother on IAMSOUND. As if they knew we’d be fiending for a couple new tracks, they’ve added a few remixes, including this one from Chairlift. It sounds like a monster’s stomach growling while it listens to old Kate Bush records.

Freeload: A Sad Yet Awesome Mixtape by Telepathe

Considering our super early love for Telepathe it’s not that surprising that they are influenced by some of the some of the exact same artists we spend much of our waking hours listening to. From Bone Thugs to Salem to early Juvenile to that one really depressing Bloc Party remix by Burial, THE PARTY JAMS ARE ALL HERE. Depending on your tolerance for sad yet awesome music, this is a good indicator of what the band is all about and also a perfect warmup for the actual totally legit release of Telepathe’s awesome Dance Mother, out April 14th on IAMSOUND. There also other awesome non-depressing songs on here, so you don’t need to worry about feeling all sad on a Thursday. Tracklist after the jump.

Exclusive Freeload: Telepathe, “So Fine (Lauren Flax Remix)”

Lauren Flax has been monstrously busy as of late (the morning after we interviewed her for her Gen F in issue 59, she embarked on an extended tour as Fischerspooner’s DJ, for instance). Between putting down her vivacious house sets worldwide, though, she squeezed in time to rework fellow Brooklyn duo Telepathe’s dark and clattering industrial song “So Fine” into an icy, eerie 4/4 track consistent with Flax’s tendencies towards emotional melodies and appreciation for goth. Sounds like anger being extinguished into isolation and finally, irreverence.

Video: Telepathe, “So Fine”

At this point, whether or not Telepathe are aware that they made a video that looks like a scene out of Reality Bites is irrelevant because they roast marshmallows over a candle (how have we never done this?), and then proceed to do a bunch of choreographed dancing in front of what looks like a garage in the alley behind our parent’s house. Dance Mother will finally be out on IAMSOUND April 14th.

Freeload: Salem + Telepathe Remix Radiohead

While we love Radiohead, we haven’t felt the need to listen to them for awhile now. It’s not that we don’t appreciate what the band does, it’s just that what they do is the root of a lot of the music we cover, and we’ve kinda moved on to the branches. Two of those branches, Telepathe who we featured in FADER 53, and Salem, who we just talk a lot about, have shown their love to our favorite experimental stadium rockers in the form of remixes of “Reckoner.” Salem’s version is the immediate standout, drenching the original in reverb and flipping Thom Yorke’s paranoid moan into something approximating a distant foghorn. None of these remixes are going to make you feel especially happy, but if you’re reading this then that might not be your steez anyway. (Via Gorilla Vs. Bear.)

**UPDATE** These remixes were commissioned by Merok (the remixers’ label) and XL (Radiohead) to commemorate the release of the Merok roster’s newest single releases, all of which are available here.

FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch Series #8: 77Klash

Beginning with the newest entry in our FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch series, we will have the songs from each side available for free download. Yesterday we had the A-side, an exclusive track by Telepathe named “Heat.” Today we’ll have 77Klash’s exclusive track, “Caroline.” Later this week, we’ll have an interview with 7-inch cover artist Dash Shaw. We also have physical copies of the record available (for free!). Email us at contests@thefader.com with your name and address for a copy until we run out.

“Caroline’s more of a dance tune,” Gize of 77Klash says about the track, “which is very different from my usual tunes.” And he’s right: when “Caroline” opens, it seems to have more in common with house than hip-hop; then 77Klash aggressively spits quickly over the squeaky, distant synthesizers and thumping beat and we’re left with nothing less than a wild hybrid of sounds.

With “Heat,” a live staple, Telepathe mess around in some really murky drone, but their sharp synthesizers, heavy drum beats, and danceable strangeness bring their sounds harmoniously in sync. “Heat” has the group reaching even deeper into the clubby darkness, bringing a strong beat to the forefront of their chilly sound.

Exclusive Freeload: Telepathe, “Bells” (Free Blood Remix)

From their new Chromes On It EP on IAMSOUND (who we are happy to confirm will be releasing Telepathe’s debut record Dance Mother in early 2009), is “Bells,” a song that sat in release limbo but held a glorious space on their MySpace page for some time. This remix by Free Blood is an entirely new and bizarrely organic reworking, no drum machines, no computer synth squeak, just Beetlejuice piano. We’ll only have this mp3 up for a week, so grab it quick. Telepathe is part of the Mad Decent tour, along with Diplo, Boy 8-Bit, Blaqstarr and Abe Vigoda, that begins tonight in New York City in Webster Hall.
