Hennessy Artistry Tour Blows Up New York City

Video courtesy of Miss Info

Last night New York City’s Terminal 5 hosted the final stop of the Hennessy Artistry Tour which included surprise performances by Bilal, Don Omar (viva reggaeton!), Consequence, Karen Wheeler of Soul II Soul, Q-Tip, and Queen Latifah, as well as mixology scientists, Common and The Roots. We arrived a little later than we wanted to, but were able to get the full scoop from our main man about town The Good Reverend Dr., who coincidentally has probably attended more Roots concerts than anyone who isn’t in the actual band.

Video: The Roots, “How I Got Over”

It’s interesting to think that The Roots, with their years of dedication to craft and commitment to live tightness, might have become better songwriters by having to play meaningless rights free intro/outros to commercials on the Jimmy Fallon Show. It’s the equivalent of being Einstein and breaking your balls for years to crack the atom, giving up, going to work at Denny’s and seeing the answer in a plate of hash browns. Actually it’s not, but, like, what? How does this happen? Maybe we should go ghostwrite Soulja Boy’s Twitter for awhile and see if suddenly the next great American novel spews out of us. It won’t. We just want that job. #wecandream

Freeload: The Roots f. Lil Wayne, “A Milli” (Live in Miami)

It’s official: this is the last version of “A Milli” that we will ever post… unless Cindy McCain covers it to appeal to the “that one” vote. And even then probably not. The Roots, live at the Fillmore in Miami with a special guest appearance by Weezy Baby. A Milli’s by ?uestlove.

Audio/Video: Keys To The City Presents Philadelphia

If you have not been to Philly do not fret because after you watch approximately 92 trillion videos from Diplo & his Mad Decent crew as well as The Roots, look at some slideshows, listen to an exclusive Mad Decent mix and hear Diplo talk about the history of Philly DJs, you can pretend you are from there and no one will be the wiser. Seriously though, go here. and check out the vast amount of digital media that represents a small fraction of the music from Philly. Also, above watch as Diplo talks about Schoolly D and Jazzy Jeff on an ugly couch.

Freeload: P.O.R.N. f. Peedi Peedi, “Rock Wit Me”

Continuing the Philly phandom on ye olde blog homestead, here’s a newish joint from Roots Crew associate P.O.R.N., who we’ve been trying to find out more about ever since his guest appearances on Rising Down (not as much of “a grower” as Game Theory, but it holds up pretty well, no?). After repeatedly being thwarted by the fact that duke has the single most Google-unfriendly rap name of all time, we ultimately had to track him down through Black Thought’s Top 8. What the hell! Anyhow, this song goes HOARD, three minutes and 22 seconds of West Philly dynamite that sounds like the bastard child of Kanye’s “Two Words” and a revving NASCAR engine. If it doesn’t get you amped for the rumored Money Making Jam Boyz record, you must not like the rap musics.

Video/Freeload: The Roots’ Big Day

Rising Up hit the “record stores” today, but yesterday was the band’s big push on tv and radio. The dudes, plus Chrisette & Wale, hit Letterman (Dave with the pound!) for “Rising Up”, but prior to that also recorded a full set on Green Lantern’s Sirius show before wrapping up the whole day at a party for the album. You can check the full recap over here and buy the album wherever makes you feel good.

Video: The Roots f. Chrisette Michelle & Wale, “Rising Up”

Babies, breakdancers and an entire lineup of FADERy type sangers and rappers under the watchful eye of Rik Cordero. We can’t really complain about that. We have also decided that Wale’s voice is in direct center on the Black Thought<-->Dice Raw spectrum. Maybe they could join up with Grandaddy IU and start a barbershop quartet or something.

Freeload: The Roots f. Dice Raw & Peedi Peedi, “Get Busy”

We love the Roots and all, and Dice is so real on this, but we need to address something else real quick. See that “kid” in the photo above? That was a grown man before Peedi rapped on this. Like he literally sons dudes, which is kind of dangerous because it’s going to be really hard for that man to get a job now.

Video: The Roots Rising Down Sessions

FADER 12 coverboys prepped the release of their new album with some jam sessions last week which you may have heard about, and this morning they let out this little video of the highlights, including some music, some interview, some celebrities and dudes from BLK JKS hanging all kinds of out at the opening party. FADER synergy.
