Warpaint Live at The Levi’s/FADER Fort NYC
- story THE FADER
Warpaint swung by the Levi’s®/FADER Fort last week after a mind-melting performance at the FADER 64 Issue Release Party, and played “Beetles” in Room 501 for us. These ladies have a certain je ne sais quoi that keeps our eyes glued to all eight minutes of this epic, epic song. Maybe it’s the bassline or the cool head scarves or the inside joking, but we kind of felt like the nerds in the bleachers while they smoked underneath them. Thanks for taking us back to the good old days, ladies.

Live: FADER 64 Issue Release Party

Last week, we decided to have an issue release party smack dab in the middle of CMJ insanity, adding to the whirlwind our beleaguered iCals promised. It felt like the right thing to do, as friends from far and wide across the boroughs and beyond came through to celebrate the birth of our Bon Iver/Dam-Funk issue with a little Budweiser and Budweiser American Ale. Everyone was treated to the excellent selections of the Cool Places Soundsystem, whose laissez-faire DJing made no bones about playing soca, bhangra and folk jams in quick succession. As they dropped Aly-Us’ “Follow Me” to our pleasure, Los Angeles dreamers/F64 Gen F stars Warpaint set up their equipment, and then proceeded to completely shred through jams like “Elephants” and “Beetles.” The crowd watched rapt, entranced by their lovely whorls. The party ended early, and everyone scattered into the night, off to see 452 more bands in three hours. See more pics from the scene after the jump.

Thank you Warpaint for reminding us that as awesome as New York is, there are other places in which we could light sparklers in the woods, throw sand around and do vaguely abstract synchronized dancing. Also, thank you Warpaint for making tightly wound music that is as uneasy as it is soothing—kind of like how, if you saw these guys dancing in the woods you’d be like, Oh I would totally go over there if I was sure they weren’t going to sacrifice me. But you could never be sure. Probably a better look to keep a safe distance anyway.

With domestic issues weighing so heavily on every American’s mind these days, it felt appropriate to focus our sixth annual photo issue inward. We started by selecting two cover stories that represent seemingly opposing factions of this country—the values of small town America via Eau Claire, Wisconsin’s Bon Iver and the hard grind of big city life through South Central Los Angeles’ Dam-Funk—and found more common ground between them than most talking heads and politicians would care to know. For the feature photo story, Peter van Agtmael’s plaintive portraits of widespread citizens and Victoria Sambunaris’ landscapes of geological sites along Interstate 80 create a visual dialogue between man and land and will hopefully leave you asking questions rather than giving answers. And because the future prosperity of the US will depend on the dreams of its newest residents as it always has, we focused our fashion story on first generation Americans and new emigres living in New York’s five boroughs. Not to mention our regular selection of Gen F profiles, including Kris Kristofferson, The XX, Neon Indian, Kurt Vile, Kyle Hall and Warpaint, plus interviews with RZA, Janka Nabay, Andrew Weatherall and tons more. So feel free (because it is literally free) to check it all out, and if you make TheFADER.com your homepage you won’t miss our treasure trove of extras and outtakes from above and beyond the issue.

For our annual photo special, we focused our sights on issues in contemporary America through the stunning domestic and landscape photographs of Peter van Agtmael and Victoria Sambunaris. And who better to reflect the state of the States than Bon Iver, who’s attained cult fame worldwide but prefers to live in the sleepy Wisconsin town of Eau Claire, and Dam-Funk, who resides in middle class South Central Los Angeles but whose music inspires funk utopias. Hence the roster of our latest issue podcast, including Family Band, Volcano Choir, Dam-Funk, Neon Indian, Kyle Hall, Warpaint and Kurt Vile, represents all corners of the USA’s urban decay and rural ramshackleness—with the exception of Fuck Buttons, whose new album is so galactic we think they might be ambassadors from another universe. Download the whole shebang below, and don’t forget to permanently blogline us since we’ll soon be dropping the entire issue on you in pdf form, for free—because in the immortal words of George Michael, you’ve got to give what you taaaaake.

A couple weeks ago, we posted Warpaint’s dreamy “Elephants” and told you guys to go check the band out on their West Coast tour dates and report back to us. Still none of those dates have passed, we are still envious of California’s sunny days (which we New Yorkers nearly have to sacrifice babies to get this year) and we still have more Warpaint music to give to you, this one even dreamier but a little less mythically inclined. Find it on the band’s soon-to-be-reissued Exquisite Corpse EP on Manimal Vinyl, September 22nd. [Insert animated gif of hawk flying through dreamcatcher]

We emailed LA mystics Warpaint after listening to all the songs on their MySpace page and having a psychic revelation that they ruled. We were like, Yo, what’s you guyses [sic] deal? And they were like, We are collectively a libran cancerian lioness with a bit of geminiacal insanity and scorpionic fire. Seriously they did, how awesome is that? They also sent us this phoenix-on-the-mountaintop of a track, and told us they are touring the West Coast before Manimal Vinyl re-issues their EP this fall. If you are on that coast, you should really go see them and report back, we are totally jealous. But because we’re not spiteful, we put the tour dates after the jump.
