When I sat in on George Clinton's recent Red Bull Music Academy lecture, he made one of the most astute observations on composing music I've heard in years: "I trust the fact that funk affects the booty. So when I see somebody doing some type of dance, I always try to figure out what groove does it take to make the booty move like that?" Listening to this new IGBO single, "Gimmie Gimmie," I can't help but imagine booties would be quaked, and George would be intrigued. "The point is this: square-butts tend to covet funkiness by asking for pointers, under the impression that there is a formula," IGBO explained in slight Clintonese to The FADER over email. "These carbon copies can be found prancing about on the net. But alas, clones have no soul. Trying to clean up the funk, you've got another thing coming." Listen close, and you'll hear vocals from 10ille and Empress Of swinging in the mix. IGBO's debut EP INDIGO GREEN BROWN ORANGE will be released on June 9th.
