Balaban said the protests were peaceful and he saw a lot of humanity up and down 5th ave. "I photographed the scene for about two and a half hours after work, and in that time I saw a range of emotions that varied from total indignation, to heartbreak, to pure unfiltered happiness," he said. "Tears were hidden by raindrops, but the expressions on people’s faces and the screams of disapproval were all I needed to to understand how affected they were by the election results the night before."
