Perfume Genius has announced details of a new album. Ugly Season is due June 17 via Matador and will be accompanied by a short fim, made in collaboration with Jacolby Satterwhite whose previous work includes Solange's When I Get Home. Ugly Season features music first made by Mike Hadreas for his 2019 immersive dance piece The Sun Still Burns Here. Two of the songs from the project, "Eye In The Wall" and "Pop Song," were released at the same time and appear on the new album. Hadreas worked on Ugly Season with producer Blake Mills and his partner/regular collaborator Alan Wyffels.

Satterwhite said in a press release: “This project is the genesis of a whole new direction that I’m taking, one that I’ve been thinking about within this endemic culture, since 2020. Mike and I are both writing scripts. My visual narrative serendipitously mirrors the lyrical direction in his music; it’s a rare, like-minded bond. It’s a creation myth. How do you architecturally mold and render an idealized version of utopia? It’s about making something that you desire so beyond your scope that it’s hard to grapple into a concrete form.”

The last studio album from Perfume Genius was 2020's Set My Heart On Fire Immediately. More recently Hadreas remixed Charli XCX's "Good Ones" and announced details of a 2022 tour.
