Eddie Murphy in talks to play funk icon George Clinton in upcoming biopic

A movie version of the Parliament-Funkadelic musician’s life is in the works.

Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy could play Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton in an upcoming biopic, Deadline reports. It is suggested that Murphy is in early talks to take on the role of Clinton in a movie that would tell the story of Clinton's childhood in 1940s North Carolina, to the formation of Parliament and Funkadelic in the late 1960s.

Murphy will produce the movie, with Deadline reporting that he and fellow producers John Davis and Catherine Davis are currently negotiating rights to Clinton's music with the artist. It is said that the movie will explore Clinton's "impact of the future of hip-hop and artists like Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outkast and the Wu-Tang Clan."

In 2019 Murphy received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Blaxploitation movie star Rudy Ray Moore in Netflix's Dolemite Is My Name, Last year he revived 1988 comedy classic Coming To America for a sequel starring, among others, musicians Teyana Taylor and Rick Ross. His upcoming roles include another reboot, with Beverly Hills Cop 4 currently in development.
