Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube lead tributes to Coolio following his death

News of the Compton rapper was found unresponsive at a friend’s house on Wednesday.

Tributes have been paid to rapper Coolio, who died at the age of 59 on Wednesday. Coolio is perhaps best known for his 1995 hit "Gangsta's Paradise" that helped usher in an era of gangster rap with mainstream appeal. His peers in the scene, including Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube, were among the first to share messages on social media following the news of his death.

Former NWA member Ice Cube said Coolio’s death was “sad news”. Writing on Twitter, he added: “This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace @Coolio”.

Weid Al Yankovic, who enjoyed one of his biggest hits with "Gangsta's Paradise" spoof "Amish Paradise" added "RIP Coolio." Meanwhile, Michelle Pfeiffer shared her memories of the rapper Pfeiffer starred in 1995 film Dangerous Minds, for which Coolio recorded his breakout single.

Writing on an Instagram post, Pfeiffer said: “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of the gifted artist @coolio. A life cut entirely too short.” She added: “30 years later I still get chills when I hear the song. Sending love and light to his family.”

Coolio's manager, Sheila Finegan, also shared a statement in which she said: “We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon.

“Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing. Please have Coolio’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

The cause of Coolio’s death has not been confirmed. It is reported that he was discovered unresponsive at a friend's house in Los Angeles.
