One Day is so titled as each of the band's members wrote and recorded their parts in just 24 hours. Guitarist Mike Haliechuk devised the format of the album and proceeded to write and record the record’s ten tracks over three eight-hour sessions.

"Twenty-four hours can feel like a long time, but you can get a lot done then, too. It can feel like forever and one minute at the same time," Haliechuk says in a statement. "If you work on something for one day, it can end up being really special."

Fucked Up released their sixth studio album and the ninth installment in the Zodiac series, Year of the Horse, in 2021. One Day marks the first time vocalist vocalist Damian Abraham has written lyrics for an album since 2014's Glass Boys. "After retreating into the fantasy world with Year of the Horse, this record is like we’re returning to real life," he says of the new album.
