Eminem‘s 2000 song “Stan,” a fictionalized account of an obsessed fan that ends in tragedy, became one of the rapper’s definitive tracks, overwhelming the collective consciousness to such a degree that “stan” became shorthand for anyone with an unhealthy attachment to a celebrity. Fast forward to 2023, and standom has become an inescapable presence in modern culture. Now, it’s the subject of a documentary courtesy of the guy who helped identify the issue. Variety reports that Eminem has signed on to co-produce a documentary film about his superfans, and it’s due out later in 2024.

A synopsis describes the film as a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring artists, Eminem, and the fans that worship him.” Steven Leckart, director of Challenger: The Final Flight, is attached to helm the project.

Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s manager and co-founder of the film’s production company, Shady Films, said “Stans will be the opportunity for us to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fans — and in some cases, fanatics. This is a study of the relationship between fanbase and artist through the lens of one of Eminem’s most fascinating songs and one of the world’s most important entertainers.”
