The cover for GOOD BOOK III by Budgie & The Alchemist
London producer Budgie told The FADER a few years ago he wants his music to make people feel more intensely: “It doesn’t have to make you feel good, even — it might make you cry, it might make you dance, it might make you laugh.” That emotive intent shines through in his warm, sample-laden production, which percolates lovers’ rock and Latin jazz through gospel music. His credits go deep (Navy Blue, Kelly Moonstone, Pink Siifu, Kanye West), and when you hear a tune like “Life’s Terms,” it’s self-evident why Budgie is in such high demand (and why that track made The FADER’s Best Songs of 2023).
Budgie and The Alchemist have reunited for THE GOOD BOOK III. The 56-track project is the third installment in the duo’s collaborative gospel series, and their first joint project in 9 years. III boasts a stacked guest list including Jadasea, Roc Marciano, and Natanya, whose alt-pop EP Feline’s Return made serious waves last year.
On album standout “FRIEND,” the London singer channels a deep sense of isolation in a few spare minutes. “Maybe I need a friend / on who I can depend / that through all of my shame / all of my pain / they never change,” she croons, her tone offering the briefest flashes of tenderness and bitterness beneath her plea for companionship. Wondering whether the song is platonic, romantic, or religious would be beside the point — the spotlight shines on Natanya alone.
I wish I could link you this song, but Natanya's team confirms via email that it won't be coming to DSPs. Instead, THE GOOD BOOK III is available for purchase via ALC Records in digital, CD, and cassette tape formats (The fake Bible rolling trays are unfortunately sold out).
