If word problems weren’t your strong suit in school, don’t worry — Rio already did the math for you. “Finna Drop (Tour)” is the latest single from the hyper-prolific Flint native, whose raps are nearly as fast-paced as his nonstop lifestyle. Barreling over a minor key piano loop and an incessant ripple of 808s, Rio boasts that he’s feeling so “Confident, I’ll get in a ring with a boxer / If he hit me too hard, I’ma swing then pop him.”
After following Rio around for a day last fall, which included a couple stops at On the Radar Radio and EMPIRE studios, certain aspects of his music feel so familiar to me they verge on predictable. But even when “Finna Drop (Tour)” deploys his usual tricks — the way he kicks his flow into double time, or the mid-verse switchbacks that snag on the drums just so — someway, somehow, Rio finds another way to reinvent the wheel.
Rio’s calculating the cash value of his bankroll by weight; if he folds it the other way, you’d still see a blue strip through the middle. He’s off a Skittle and a G6 (don’t ask); he’s, “In every city, ridin' through the hood, I'm just juice searchin’.” He shouts out Future and Rylo Rodriguez — they both already dropped, so Rio doesn’t have any competition to go #1 — and takes a moment to say, hilariously and for ostensibly no reason, “Fuck Kendrick and fuck that n***a Drake.” This is of course, all a prelude to his upcoming album, The World Is Yours, out September 11.
