Live: Ariel Pink on a Good Times Shopping Spree

Based on his recent set at Detroit Bar in Orange County, California, we’ve decided that Ariel Pink shows are deceptively fun. One second, you’re watching Pink pace around on stage with a reuseable grocery bag on his arm, and the next you’re inadvertently dancing with goth hippies (if there is such a thing). While our knees and elbows got bruised up from our partners’ lack of coordination and body control, it was not enough to deter us from having a genuine good time. Ariel and Haunted Graffiti will be back on tour across North America in March so check them out if you can, and if you manage to find a copy, snatch up the Can’t Hear My Eyes b/w Evolution’s A Lie 7-inch that recently came out on Mexican Summer. Only 500 were made, but it’s the first recording of Pink with the full Haunted Graffiti band and it is crazy good, especially the B-side.

Video: Ariel Pink, “Gray Sunset”

There are very few artists who can put out a new video for a five or six year old song and get us to post it. Ariel Pink is one of them. “Gray Sunset” is a song off The Doldrums, an album which Ariel explained as “really weird in the sense that I don’t know of anything—historically speaking—that is predicated on a generation of mistakes that led the course to a final product,” in Issue 27 of The FADER, and we gotta say that it still sounds as strange and mistakenly great as the first time we heard it. The video was shot and edited by Travis Peterson in LA last week on a 1983 Sony tube video camera and debuts Ariel’s new androgynous look which oddly looks like a genetic splicing of a couple people in this office.
