Video: Beyonce f. Lady Gaga, “Videophone”
TOO MUCH GOING ON IN THIS VIDEO. First Beyonce is Rihanna complete with bleached-blonde Misfits lock, then she is a robot from a Bjork video, then she’s a Bond girl, Bettie Page, Neneh Cherry/Monie Love (in a Gerlan tee!) and like, the hottest/cattiest tranny since Amanda Lepore. Never mind that she looks HOT AS SHIT through the video, we just kinda think she needed to choose a couple themes and go with them.

Video: Antony and the Johnsons, “Crazy in Love” (Beyonce Cover)
- story Matthew Schnipper
“Crazy in Love” was the jam the summer it came out. This was 2003, before Serato, and with the official 12-inch being just remixes, DJs either found the super random white label (Killah Kuts was no help), played it off the LP (which sounded terrible) or you were one of the lucky folks who had CDJs and knew what to do with them. Imagine Antony at some club in lower Manhattan hearing Beyonce coming through the speakers all tinny and being like, “Oh shit.” He must have felt out diva’d. Probably hit him hard, because it was a couple of years before he started to cover the song. He transformed it, never even approached anything like a faithful cover—definitely smart—he knew to leave sleeping dogs lie or whatever. Or the opposite, let the dogs running around run and then his dog could go lie down with this moody dream cover. We saw him perform this at the Apollo. The only thing it had in common with Beyonce was the exquisite dress he was wearing. They are both masters.

- story THE FADER
After watching the mindblowing, nearly live, insider videos of the inaugural festivities that John Legend is posting on John Legend TV (Barack doing the “Single Ladies” hand thing with Beyonce, Al Gore kicking it, etc), we’ve decided that this dude is alright. (via Daily Swarm)

In the spirit of keeping it all the way live (Lakeside!), Beyonce never seemed all that cool with sharing the spotlight, and you can probably imagine how Sasha Fierce feels. Accordingly, Nicki Minaj had to hijack B’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” and put two verses on it that sound like Sasha’s dancing looks. Besides rapping in patois as well as some derivative of an English accent (a Slick Rick impersonation perhaps?), she tells some dude who passed up the chance to propose, “Sucks for you.” We can believe that.

If, like us, you’ve become totally obsessed, in ways both healthy and not, with Beyoncé’s amazing new video, then this post is for you. The clip up top is Gwen Verdon’s Bob Fosse-helmed “Mexican Breakfast”—the inspiration for “Single Ladies”’s choreography—which embraces empty studio space and a moving camera to redefine dance for the small screen. After catching it on YouTube, we decided to go deeper and in the opposite direction, and we have assembled a few of our favorite small space “Single Ladies”—from the pigeon-toed drag of Biodun to the 100% accurate Single Man—after the jump for your viewing pleasure.

Summer 2003, when “Crazy in Love” was released, Black Eyes member Daniel Martin-McCormick recorded his own cover version of the track. We were finally able to procure an mp3 of the song from the one disintegrating cassette it has existed on for past four and a half years (hence the slightly dumpy quality) and we have it for your download. Black Eyes were in FADER 20 later that year, and you can catch that article after the jump. And check the Californian 2/5ths of Black Eyes now known as Mi Ami.

Kanye’s Triumphant Return to Blogging
- story THE FADER
Back on the e-grind, Kanye West has taken a Stars: They’re Just Like Us approach to the internet with a series of him playing Beyonce at Connect 4 while wearing a shirt we are pretty sure he got at J Crew and drinking Perrier (which may be fancy but really isn’t that expensive and sometimes we buy it so that’s like us). Beyonce beat him nine times in a row. And he said he won one game. So they played at least 10 times. So maybe they aren’t that much like us because how do you play at least 10 games of Connect 4?
