Freeload: Kuroma, “In New York, Everything is Tropical” (El Guincho Remix)

To be honest, this remix sounds pretty much exactly like we expected it to — it’s El Guincho! We knew it would sound like Sebastian the Lobster from Little Mermaid playing drums on some shells, but what should we expect, he seems to spend 98% of his time making awesome music with a wooden block on a beach somewhere. There’s some stuff about New York buried in the lyrics and that’s cool too, but man, El Guincho. That guy knows how to live.

Félix of Discoteca Oceano just posted some new Spanish pop by Extraperlo and Joe Crepuscolo on 20JFG, and all is good, but of course the favorite of the bunch is our man El Guincho’s dub of Crepusculo’s “Gabriela.” It’s not often we get such simplicity from El Guincho, but it’s good to know he can also make good songs out of bare bones. It also gives us a reason to link to this Flickr set of his recent trip to Ghana where he played a couple of shows including one epic beachfront session at which every local MC who’d been given Pablo’s cellphone number along the way showed up to jump on the mic. Some great photos on there courtesy of Caius Pawson of Young Turks. The trip was arranged by the Spanish cultural attaché because of the hiplife samples on Alegranza! which is maybe the coolest government action we’ve heard about since, eh, forever. Pablo told us to stay tuned for further trip-related materials to surface, so we’ll encourage you to do the same.

Gorilla vs Bear just put up a contest in conjunction with iMeem to win actual cassette copies of El Guincho’s new mixtape, which he also has up for download. Let it be a test of the youth’s desire for physical artifacts and antique media players. Let it also be a reminder to download the mix El Guincho made for us a while back and to read the FADER 54 El Guincho feature story. Let it remind you!

We got in early on El Guincho with a multitude of blog posts, office plays and a general uptick in our respect for parrots (so underrated). We saw him in Williamsburg. It was great. We asked him to make us a mix. Again, great. And then we put a big, lovely feature on him in issue 54. All of that on the strength of an album released lightly around Europe. That album, Alegranza! is now going out to the rest of the world in October and this is one of the many great songs from it.

Live: El Guincho Needs Fewer Fans
- story THE FADER
Just kidding. El Guincho needs more fans, but Union Pool in Williamsburg maybe needs a stricter door policy or a bigger building because—and we know we contributed to the building hype around the Guinch—we couldn’t even drink our damn beers due to it being fire hazard crowded in there. We also didn’t have room to dance which is a shame because El Guincho gets down like Animal with a sexy Penelope Cruz lisp. He’s slight, wears red jeans and jams the shit out of his sampler, layering heavy percussion on heavy percussion to the point where the house system is overwhelmed and you can’t hear any of the little samples that make his album Alegranza so crazy on the hi-fi. We never quite understood the Panda Bear comparisons outside of being one-men shows and making sweet songs, and especially now that Pablo rocked our bodies while Noah made love to our minds, we are definitely sure they can both fill exclusive parts of our lives without us having to be like Oh you like that one you’ll like this one too every time someone says they like one of them. And now that El Guincho has signed to biggie XL, we are sure there will be bigger fish trying to make the comparison.

When Pitchfork slapped their “best new music” tag on El Guincho recently we can’t say we were all that surprised. Alegranza, his 2007 album on Discoteca Oceano, has been the soundtrack to our Friday afternoons, Sunday mornings, listless Wednesdays etc etc for a long while now and we have been searching for a way to get the dude on the website or in the magazine. In lieu of just talking about his incredible music that packs innumerable influences into each song, we asked him, Pablo that is, to make us a mix of said influences, and he did it. You can download that below and check the tracklist after the jump. Perfect for pre-Spring/Fall, depending on your hemisphere. Keep a look out for more Guincho stuff with us in the future and if you’re in Texas next week definitely check him out at SXSW.
