Freeload: The FADER Issue 62 Podcast
- story THE FADER
We and you and everyone we know has been trumpeting the Summer Of Love 2009, and it was our mantra as we put together FADER Issue 62. We scoured the universe for the summeriest, most barbecuey music this year and came up with an issue that, if you scratch-and-sniff it, smells vaguely coconutty like Hawaiian Tropic (not really). As such, this issue’s podcast, presented by Bacardi B-LIVE, is about as clear a definition of what we think you should be listening to in the coming months as we could possibly make. It’s got songs from every artist in the issue from cover stars Phoenix, Major Lazer, Maluca, DJ Sega and Popo; featured power-bros Young Dro, Dum Dum Girls, Wavves, Crocodiles, Family Time Records fam, Gen Fers Omega, D-Lo and Sleepy D, Esser, CFCF, and like a trizillion more people! Download it below and listen while reading the issue, scorching hot like the sun on newsstands right now. And come back to TheFADER.com in two weeks for the free issue PDF that you can save on your computer until the robots take over.

The dons at Fools Gold Records have launched a monthly iTunes podcast, and the inaugural jumpoff is this little sampling of classic NY house music sugar by Toronto’s Nacho Lovers. We’ve been revisiting Cajmere a lot lately, adore old house, and are hungry for junk food. They read our minds! You can listen and download here AND subscribe to the FG podcast here for a regular 30-day fix, it’s reliable like the rent.

Because this is the Style Issue and we couldn’t figure out a way to turn clothing into sound, we decided it would be just as good if we had our pal DJ Rezound put together a collection of the music that was featured in the issue. That music includes a new age love song from Bat for Lashes, Beirut’s collaboration with Teotitlan del Valle’s Banda Jimenez, Gen F jams from San Francisco’s Girls (featuring no actual girls), Nite Jewel, Assassin, Brick Bandits, Sholi and a whole bunch more. As always, download the mix for free below, check the tracklist after the jump and don’t forget to read the magazine that it goes with, available for free download here, or available for a $5.99 physical download from some guy at the magazine store’s hands into your own hands.

This year’s NOW issue (free download here) is basically our way of putting love on paper. The stories are all the result of romances with music that we think will hit you hard in 2009 — Charles Hamilton, Little Boots, Blank Dogs, Electrik Red — and those are just the features. But since it’s difficult to express our feelings without you hearing the songs, we put together another podcast of music from the issue, including jams from Woolfy, Amazing Baby, De Tropix, Wavves, Lauren Flax, Antony and Homebwoi that will make your little blog heart flutter. Get the podcast below and check the tracklist after the jump.

The best part about putting these podcasts together every issue is hearing the songs that have become separate favorites all in one place, which not only reminds us why we loved them in the first place but also let’s us know that we are doing a pretty good job. This issue—our 10th anniversary—was no different, though after a quick listen, our first thought was, This is a diverse and exciting collection of music, and our second thought was, How are we not tired of “Pop Champagne” yet? Along with Ron Browz’s new anthem, we have songs from Ye and No Age, Mujava and the Muslims, Big Pink, Illa J and many more. Grab the mix below and get the tracklist after the jump.

Some issues of The FADER are more difficult to put together than others, with our editors pulling hair or pulling teeth to get the right stories in the right places at the right time. The music portion of FADER Number 57 was relatively easy for two reasons. First, it’s our Photo Issue and many of its pages are filled with striking, provocative images by some of our favorite contributors. Second, cover stars Brightblack Morning Light and TV on the Radio both released albums that blew our minds, and the rest just fell into place based on the bounty of great new bands putting out music right now. Surprisingly, the accompanying audio podcast of music from the issue was a bigger challenge, what with all that excellent music, but we think we killed it. Grab it below and get the tracklist after the jump.

FADER contributing editor and DJ Eddie Stats hooked up an excellent mix of the other artists featured in our Aaliyah icon issue. From Bassline’s rumbling thump to Lykke Li’s Swedish pop stomp and back around to El Guincho’s electronic drum circle throwdowns, it’s all here, along with musical selections from the Gen F backbone of the issue, including Chip tha Ripper, War on Drugs, Jeremy Jay and a bunch of others.

FADER contributing editor and DJ Eddie Stats hooked up an excellent mix of the music that made our issue. From Glass Candy’s chilled italo disco to Lil Boosie’s southern sneer, we sonically cover it all: including auto tune enthusiasts Ricky Blaze and Demarco, the DFA’s new disco, Ladyhawk’s bar rock and Telepathe’s weirdo Brooklyn swagger. There’s a bunch more to check in the mix, so download it below.
