Two Atlanta producers allege that Lil Nas X unfairly copied their track.

Lil Nas X and Cardi B are being sued over “Rodeo,” their collaboration from Lil Nas X’s debut EP 7. Per a new Pitchfork report, Atlanta producers Glen Keith DeMeritt III and and Don Lee allege that “Rodeo” bears significant similarity to “Broad Day” by PuertoReefa and Sakrite Duexe, which featured elements of a beat titled “gwenXdonlee4-142” created by the two men. DeMeritt and Lee allege that Lil Nas and his collaborators — David Biral, Denzel Baptiste, Roy Lenzo, Russ Chell and Cardi B — “did not receive permission” to interpolate or copy the song.

This case is the latest in an increasing number of copyright lawsuits being brought against top-tier pop stars and producers. In August, Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson were accused of stealing “Shallow,” their Oscar-winning A Star Is Born song from a little-known songwriter called Steve Ronsen. Earlier that same month, Katy Perry was ordered to pay $2.78 million to Christian rapper Flame over similarities between her chart-topper “Dark Horse” and his track “Joyful Noise.” And last month, Travis Scott settled a lawsuit brought against him by DJ Paul from Three 6 Mafia, who alleged that “No Bystanders” ripped elements from “Tear Da Club Up.” Read about the Katy Perry judgement — and why it could change pop forever — here.
