“Women who speak out about sexual abuse should not be silenced by NDAs that contravene California law,” Twigs’s lawyers wrote in court filings.

FKA Twigs is free to publicly speak about her abusive relationship with ex Shia LaBeouf after the actor agreed to terminate and void a prior NDA. That move came seven months after Twigs filed a complaint in Los Angeles court saying the 2025 agreement was illegal under California’s STAND Act.

Speaking to PEOPLE Magazine, Twigs’s attorney Matthew Rosengart said in part, “Twigs stood up for something larger than herself, all female survivors of sexual abuse […] this important victory completely frees her to discuss her experience, advocate for other women who might be less privileged, and support the charitable causes of her choice.”

Also speaking to PEOPLE, LaBeouf lawyer Shawn Holley said, “Shia wishes twigs nothing but the best in her life and career and, to that end, has agreed to end their long-standing dispute. Twigs has spoken about this matter for years and there is now nothing to prevent her from continuing to do so.”

The court filings were initially reported on Tuesday by Billboard, and stem back to a 2020 lawsuit where Twigs accused LaBeouf of “relentless abuse,” including sexual battery, assault, and emotional distress. LaBeouf settled that $10 million lawsuit in July 2025, though the terms of the settlement were undisclosed.

In March 2026, Twigs filed court documents alleging that LaBeouf had filed a “secret arbitration complaint” over an October 2025 interview. Twigs’s lawyers wrote that LaBeouf was attempting to silence Twigs in direct contradiction to California law. The terms of that NDA allegedly also restricted the charities that Twigs was allowed to support.

While a court never got the chance to weigh in, it’s worth noting that LaBeouf’s attorneys had strenuously denied Twigs’s claims back in March, saying that Twigs had already agreed to the terms of the settlement. Twigs’s lawyers argued that her interview had not violated the terms of the NDA, but even if she had, the NDA itself was illegal and unenforceable.

In court filings, Twigs’s lawyers wrote that she was, “proud to be able to continue speaking about her experience and advocating for other women, including those who may lack the resources to speak out and defend themselves.”
