Freeload: Erykah Badu f. Pharoahe Monch, “The Healer” Remix
- story THE FADER
Here’s the studio version of Pharoahe Monch’s freestyle over Badu’s “The Healer” from a couple months back. We still totally fuck with Organized Konfusion because if you focus really hard Monch sounds like he’s just rapping gibberish. It’s sort of the aural equivalent of a backwards magic eye. Sidenote: remember when there was supposed to be an Organized Konfusion reunion, and O.C. was supposed to be part of the group as well but instead we got that Prince Po solo album that had a song produced by Richard X? Neither do we!

This is how we like Badu: unleashed over some tomorrowland funk, a little skepticism in the catch in her throat. This is how we like Re-Up: tight, a little mean, but nice with allegories. “In Miami / Pushing the nose candy / I’m feelin like Michael the way I’m baggin the grammys.” YOWCH. Producer Rashad Ringo Smith (the legendary, we mean, KIND OF) did the honors, flipping a little horn (Busta Rhymes ref, non?) and letting her voice slip and slide all over the pound of synths. This and the fact that it’s still light out = SUMMER IS IN THE MAIL.

Every nerd with a modem has been talking about these sleevefaces lately, but Erykah takes it a step further, putting her face on the sleeves of what we’re guessing are some of her favorite records. Then she takes it another step (that’s two full steps further) by inserting herself into some classic videos, in the process showing off her devastating wig collection. If you didn’t catch it, make sure to listen to her next single, “The Healer”, over at her MySpace. (You can thank Yahoo for the ridiculously oversized video player.)

Erykah Badu is releasing her new album New AmErykah late next month, and to be honest, we weren’t expecting anything too crazy. Trust, we’d pre-slotted her into the cd carousel between Sade and Bilal because WE ARE TRYING TO GET OURS, but this sounds more like Lee Perry. Produced by treemaster extraordinaire Madlib, “Healer” has Badu babytalking some shit about Ras Tafari and quoting Dead Prez, ie STONER JAM. We’re into it. You can check a live performance of another Madlib production from the album, “Real Thing,” from the Stones Throw show in NYC back in December right here.
UPDATE: Removed by Universal/Motown, but it still jams.
