Travis Porter f. YT & ATL, “All The Way Turnt Up”

During the press run for his Underground Atlanta compilation, Mike Bigga or as he allows us to call him, Killer Mike, likened ATL trio Travis Porter to The Beastie Boys. We’re assuming he meant when they were the same age as Travis Porter. Which is not to take anything away from Mike D still rocking Kaws and sunglasses all the the time, but these dudes are living for the party, or are basically, “All The Way Turnt Up.” Our sources tell us that this is shutting clubs down in the A right now and though we didn’t get this from Soulja Boy’s twitter, apparently he’s with it too.

Update: Apparently, the song belongs to Soulja Boy cohort Roscoe Dash and was hi-jacked by Travis Porter.

We’d be willing to bet fewer people would have problems with ATL strip club anthems if dudes rapped like Killer Mike on them, not that we think that’s correct, just putting it out there. They are, after all, songs for women to do NSFW activities to, not for dudes to count internal rhymes in a particular 16 bars. A recent office favorite, Killer Mike’s Underground Atlanta gets quickly into this highly intellectualized jam for the gentlemen’s clubs over a suitably Nard & B production, and the video is just as entertaining and office-unfriendly as you might expect.

David Banner & 9th Wonder ft. Lisa Ivey, “Something Is Wrong” MP3

Following on from Nas’ open letter and Killer Mike’s recent, stirring blog post regarding the senseless murder of Derrion Albert, the always outspoken David Banner steps up to address Albert’s death in song. Banner uses the tragedy as a launching pad to rap about many modern problems—violence, racism, sexism and abuse—and in turn, at least somewhat, responds to the criticism that hip hop is not taking a large enough roll in confronting the issues that led to Albert’s death. To Mike’s point though, last year over 30 students were murdered in Chicago alone and this was not an anomaly, either geographically or statistically. It is not something new to many who have grown up in area’s like the south side of Chicago. So that Derrion’s death and the boys responsible for it were caught on tape, that he was an honor student and they were not, that he did not deserve to die and they now apparently do, are all things that have motivated these three artists to speak is powerful. Whether it motivates anyone else remains to be seen.

Stream: Killer Mike, Underground Atlanta

It’s a weird throwback that the current underground Atlanta includes one and a half hit wonder Trillville, but it’s a relief that it still includes Princess. Ringleader, cheerleader and proud papa Killer Mike has wrangled a sort of album/sort of mixtape/sort of yearbook of Atlanta, made up of a bulk of his new tracks of melancholy trap rap we love him for, but also sprinkled with cuts from the younger folks on their way up, like FADER friend Pill (but no Donnis).

Thank the rap gods that Killer Mike stays innovating in his own way. He’s not going to record an album of space funk about flying on a pink rocket ship to Sa-Ra’s home planet or anything, but he will go out of his way to put new and underappreciated rappers in the spotlight. Baby steps! Here’s another song from Mike’s Underground Atlanta compilation, which apparently features almost every rapper not named Andre or Big Boi from Atlanta that we’ve ever cared about. Okay, that’s a wild exaggeration, but there are a lot of awesome people on the album and he also got us to care about Big Kuntry King on this song.

Video: Killer Mike f. Big Boi, “My Chrome”

We read that the new Woody Allen movie is taken from a very old script—vintage New York Jew problems and bemoanings—but it was filmed in the last year. The “My Chrome” video, directed by Hype Williams, is sort of the same thing. Unreleased until now, the video for this 2005 single has a budget bigger than the deal any new rapper is getting in illegal download recession era America. The budget for the video’s actual chrome is probably bigger. The budget for the guy who polished the chrome is probably bigger.

We’ve been cautiously optimistic about the Killer Mike-curated Underground Atlanta compilation, featuring lots of dudes deserving of more shine (and some that are awesome and get a fair bit of shine already). There was a lot about it that made us think it would never come out, not the least of which being that it involves the postponed-at-all-times-on-everything Killer. But—BUT!—first single “Hoes” featuring C Bone and everyone’s third favorite Dungeon Family second-stringer Slimm Calhoun popped up on the internet recently, giving us hope that come June (or July, or August) we’ll be relaxing with a bunch of songs from ATL’s most known unknowns.

For the past couple years, every time we’ve seen Killer Mike in concert he’s talked about the internet and its collective dismissal of marquee artists’ underlings as “weed carriers.” The brilliance of that phrase not withstanding, Mike is, and always has been, a serious dude. Killer, even. But shouting “I do not have weed carriers!” alone isn’t enough to credit a hypeman. A mouthful of Iceberg Slim-cold trap stories and a strong mixtape, however, just might be the ticket. Pill’s
4180 The Prescription mixtape drops this Friday on his myspace
and website.

Thanks to the democracy of the internet, Killer Mike can hop on Jeezy’s fairly unimpeachable “My President is Black” and call everyone ignorant. He went a little overboard—telling rappers to stop making songs about Obama until they sound smarter in their interviews and claiming to have started the “hip-hop is dead movement” which we weren’t even aware was an actual movement so much as just a couple dudes complaining for a week—but that’s why he’s Killer Mike. And essentially we agree that reading books is a pretty good idea.

Freeload: Killer Mike, “Dope Boys”

In one of the 32 million Killer Mike blog posts we’ve written we said that new Killer Mike was always an occasion, but if dude comes with a song every Sunday is it still an occasion? If he consistently bodies beats like The Game’s “Dope Boys,” then yeah, we’re willing to get excited about it. That being said…Rappers! Slow your roll on the weekly songs, we only have two ears.
