Nipsey Hussle f. Snoop Dogg, “Gangsta’s Life” MP3

From the start, almost everyone has compared Nipsey Hussle to Snoop (including us), probably more because of his build, braids and smirk than his rapping, but this collabo should put that to rest. Hussle is raspier and more aggressive to Snoop’s long lost silky menace, and as much a product of Game and Xzibit as anything else, and that’s probably why he’s being propped up as the new voice of the West Coast. Go listen to Game’s “California Vacation” and you have Hussle’s whole DNA. But he even beats up on this mellow riding track, to the point that you gotta wonder what its like to, like, go to the beach with this dude. Probably makes you feel like an asshole for not passing the sunscreen fast enough, which is not a bad thing, we all need to stop being such mark ass busters about skin cancer.

Drake f. Nipsey Hussle, “Killer” MP3

Two of our most obvious recent favorites jump on a motivational track out of nowhere. We’d be more surprised if we didn’t already know Drake’s been recording all over the country and Nipsey’s the new LA representative. (via October’s Very Own)

Nipsey Hussle, Bullets Ain’t Got No Names Vol. 3

So Nipsey Hussle’s much anticipated Bullets Aint Got No Names Vol. 3 dropped a couple days ago and to the surprise of many, was only either streamable by way of iMeem, or available for purchase through his myspace. We can understand that young Nipsey must have spent the better part of the past four months working on it and like the previous editions, was likely to be comprised of many original songs and production, incurring some expenses a few copies sold digitally could really help to recoup. But then we found out that another site, feeling especially entitled, convinced someone from Hussle’s label to provide a link for free download. This is unsettling not because we love paying money for things (deep tissue shiatsu massages excluded), but because we very much so believe in the value of this project, and no less importantly, modern recorded music. Now as a site that offers new music for download daily, we might have less of a right to criticize than we’re affording ourselves, but to paraphrase many a hustler before Hustle, Can he live? We doubt anything like this will be happening with Hussle’s major label debut, due at the end of the year, but in the meantime, Bullets Ain’t Got No Names Vol. 3 is available to stream here, and for purchase here.

Video: Nipsey Hussle, “Strapped”

Is it weird that Nipsey Hussle, though swimming in Yankees apparel, looks just as at home lurking in the courtyard of Bronx apartment buildings as he does leaned back in a lowrider on the streets of Los Angeles? Authenticity may be one Nipsey’s more formidable strengths, but it doesn’t hurt that a song oozing with West Coast imagery works just as well set to a 2009 solo extension of Wu Tang’s “Protect Ya Neck” video.

It’s not often that we condone sample recycling, but the fact of the matter is, Biggie only said so much shit. And pretty much all of it was monumental. Nipsey Hussle carries a flag for Frank White once again, this time disposing of mariners and muckrakers all in the same breath. “These niggas wanna switch ships cause they boat broke/I’m like no, suck a duck, and’s how I stay afloat.” Latecomers beware, the “hip hop Jacques Cousteau” is not for play.

We will never, ever condone sampling or covering Sade in any way—her shit is PERFECT as is—but in the case of this newly leaked track from Nipsey’s upcoming Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. III, we will make an exception because we can’t deny the quiet power of Nipsey getting romantic.

Lloyd Banks f. Nipsey Hussle, “Me and My Strap” MP3

It wouldn’t be almost-summer without Banksy’s cigar-resin gruff growl reminding us that when weather gets hot, mean shit goes down. We do not advocate gun violence, but we definitely advocate Nipsey Hussle cracking off his verse with an audible sneer, the sound of actual shots popping. Side note: Nipsey Hussle is basically the nicest dude ever.

FADER TV: Nipsey Hussle, “Let’s Talk Money” (Live at the Issue #61 Release Party)

Everyone, ourselves included, has been comparing Nipsey Hussle to Snoop, but after his brief yet intense performance at our party on Wednesday night, we’ve decided that’s only because they kind of look alike. Hussle has no kind of Snoopish blasé when he’s onstage: snatching spliffs, barking at the sound guy (sorry dude), jumping into the crowd and generally firing off round after round of awesome LA gun clap rap. If you missed the party, here’s “Let’s Talk Money,” and make sure to pick up the new issue of The FADER when it hits newsstands next week to read our story about Hussle.

Live: FADER 61 Issue Release Party

To celebrate the fact that we just finished an issue with David Byrne on the cover (insane!) we decided to link up with our dudes at We Make It Good to throw a party in a crazy popup store with giant phones and videos projected everywhere. We also decided that for some good old FADER synergy we’d have a few of the F61-featured Dutty Artz crew warm us up while we knocked back Budweiser and ogled the dude dressed as Karl Lagerfeld. Weird times. Before 10:00pm, California’s next great rap hope Nipsey Hussle hopped on stage, and kept us interested in the face of sound problems and camera snaps. By the time Pretty Titty started playing jams we were feeling a teeny tiny bit less responsible (if you know what we mean), so we walked off into the night, another successful FADER party under our belts.

We’ve flubbed Nipsey Hussle’s name more times than you need to know, but we’re pretty sure that will change after tonight when he plays our FADER #61 issue release party, having just hopped on his flight out of LAX. This dude, more than anyone in a decade probably, makes us want to stand on the corner drinking forties and calling people “marks” and shit like that, so we gave him a spot in the issue and are now telling you to get your hands on everything he has released so far, including this new song off the next volume in his Bullets Ain’t Got No Name mixtape series, Volume Three, which will be in the streets in May. Stay tuned for video from the party later this week and an extra special FADER TV doc on Hussle coming later this month.
