Kingdom’s Discobelle Mix MP3
- story Matthew Schnipper

The first time we saw Kingdom DJ it was at Mansion, a giant, terrible club in Manhattan, the kind of place with $12 beers and a huge, fake chandelier. It was for a fashion show, not a party, so the extreme loudness off his Baltimore club and electro set was completely jarring in the middle of the day, waiting for a bunch of dudes in weird bondage outfits to strut their stuff. Kingdom was in the balcony, hovering above like he owned the place. But when you looked close, you could see he was fairly hunched over to reach the CDJs. He’s tall, and wearing a giant T-shirt, he looked like a gawky teen master of ceremonies getting one over on us. Since then, we’ve become better acquainted with Kingdom—he’s something of a FADER house DJ—and have found out that he’s both very serious about his music while maintaining a very childlike excitement about it. For this Discobelle mix, Kingdom runs down the tracklist, dropping genres like “Japanese baile funk,” “rhythm & grime” and “tribal guarachero.” He’s putting in the work of a total dweeb, but with a player’s finesse. This is all before his first official release has come out, too—not because he can’t, he just wanted to let it simmer right. Catch him at any number of shows in New York soon. And somewhere with Joker on Nov. 20th. We can’t even tell where from the flyer on his MySpace, but we’ll be there.

Live: FADER 63 Issue Release Party
- story THE FADER
- photo John Francis Peters
The last time we had a FADER issue release party, summer was just beginning and we couldn’t have been more psyched. Now that summer is on the way out, we are still strangely psyched. Helping our general enthusiasm for all things slightly colder and slightly darker was last night’s FADER 63 Fall Fashion Issue release party DJ’d by Kingdomand featuring a Glasser performance backed by our dudes in Tanlines (Glasslines!). After a couple minor sound difficulties were ironed out, the three performers locked into a Kate Bush-esque groove and stole our hearts immediately. After a few Budweisers, we headed out into the semi-brisk air, weirdly excited to start wearing coats again. After the jump check out a bunch of snaps from the event.
Kid Sister, “Right Hand Hi (Kingdom Remix)” MP3
- story Peter Macia
Kingdom played records at our FADER issue 63 release party last night in Brooklyn, and though we don’t specifically remember him playing this particular remix of Kid Sister, it does sound a lot like a lot of the records he did play: lots of low end, hints of tropical drum patterns, plenty of space. It’s a really classy retwerk of what was originally a sort of midtempo raver, which seems like a contradiction but maybe it isn’t.
The FADER Issue 63 Podcast MP3

Our annual Fall Fashion issue is covered by the unlikeliest of stars—Drake, the former teen heartthrob turned hottest thing in rap, and Girls, whose main man escaped a Christian cult to write ragged pop songs. We’re all about switching up life plans this autumn and opting for the unexpected—partially inspired by these guys, partially by performance arty fashion designer Henrik Vibskov, also featured in the issue, who we’re using as our muse into 2010 (don’t freak out if you see us in the street wearing yarn over our faces). The latest issue podcast reflects our transformational attitudes, with disparate but equally awesome tracks by Pissed Jeans, Glasser, Douster, Kingdom, Free Energy, French Montana, plus a ton more, and of course the aforementioned cover stars. Download it below while asking yourself, “HOW CAN I BE MORE AWESOME THIS AUTUMN (if that is even possible)?” And keep TheFADER.com on lock, for on September 1st, we shall post the PDF of our entire issue for free, because we’re just that into you.

Marcus Price & Carli “Mat, Bira, Kvinnor, Weed (Kingdom Remix)” MP3
- story Peter Macia
- photo John Francis Peters (F63)
If you ever get the chance to meet Kingdom you’ll find out that he’s a really nice guy, pretty funny and dressed clean. It’s totally incongruous to his music, which is super nasty, totally serious and kind of gross—in a good way. In a way that makes you get really pumped to do some Skerrit Bwoy-type finishing moves on the dancefloor when Kingdom slaps a ridiculous toad chirp in the latter part of a song like he does on this remix.

Kingdom & Bok Bok’s Night Slugs Mix MP3
- story Julianne Escobedo Shepherd

Two of our favorites right now, Brooklyn’s Kingdom and London’s Bok Bok, linked up for the Night Slugs radio show last month and their 1-for-1 mind-meld turned out kind of perfect, a warm and melodic superjam of UK funky, dubstep jiggle and mucho Kingdom exclusives. Tread lightly, it gets pretty fast and loose up in there, or, as the Brit radio personalities say, “massive.” Really, the only thing disappointing about it is the lack of atmospheric club lighting in the office. Track list after the jump.

Total Freedom & Nguzunguzu, “Wildness (Club Vortex Mixtape)”
Club Vortex is a monthly held at Glasslands in NY where all manner of outré/vanguard worldwide dance musics are played, and prior to each episode the guest DJs make a mixtape. The next installment is Kingdom’s b-day, FADER fave Maluca is performing live (always a rad time) and guest DJs Total Freedom and Nguzunguzu from Los Angeles are bringing the vibe of their Wilderness party to the Brooklyn warehouse setting, which according to this mixtape may include the Keri Hilson vox from “Swag On” over some kind of organic sounding triple-syncopated kinda-ragga rhythms, a possible Bollywood track blended with maybe the song from the “Natasha!” scene in Party Girl, Nicki Minaj “Go Hard” with a total BK-style drumline backing track, and copious drops filtered through a witness-protection-program vocal converter. This is all speculation, not actual scientific tracklistage, but the tape is hot and when you go to the party this Friday, July 10th (details here), you will not be hearing anything boring, played, wack or 100% identifiable. Happy B-day Kingdom!
